Top-shelf new winery in the works at CRFT Wines

An exciting NEW winery is coming soon at CRFT Wines, fulfilling a long-time dream of owners Candice and Frewin.

Adelaide Hills-based winery CRFT Wines will soon be on cloud wine, with the exciting addition of a brand new winery on the horizon.

The building of the new winery has been in the works for the past few months and will allow CRFT Wines more space to make their small-batch, certified organic wines along with providing extra sustainability benefits.

The winery will include two new temperature-controlled barrel rooms and the roof will be covered with solar panels.

CRFT Wines are passionate about minimal intervention, so the new space has been designed as a gravitational winery so grapes can be processed downhill without using pumps, allowing wine to be moved around more gently.

The wines are crafted by husband and wife duo Candice Helbig and Frewin Ries and Frewin said it has been a long-time dream of theirs to have a gravitational winery.

“It will be completed by the end of this year, we will definitely be in full swing for next harvest. The winery will enable us to do things a lot more efficiently and easily and I can see that we are going to have a definite increase in quality,” Frewin said.

“The new winery is going to enable us to do the small things properly and it is the small things that make the difference. Each of those small improvements add up to be a big improvement.”

Frewin and Candice create their unique wines using fruit from a handful of blocks in South Australia’s Adelaide Hills and Barossa Valley, with each wine made from grapes picked from a single vineyard.

“We both share the winemaking responsibility together, I think we have done about 48 harvests between the two of us. Both of us left high school and started working in wine, so we have been in wine all of our working lives,” Frewin says.

The boutique winery was established in 2012, the cellar door opened in 2017, and the vines in the small-batch winery’s stunning vineyard turn vibrant shades of yellow and green as the seasons change

They grow single vineyards of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Grüner Veltliner – the three varieties which drew the couple to the Hills – and they also source a small handful of grapes from the Barossa and Eden Valley.

CRFT Wines also completed a small-scale renovation last year, which added a beautiful new lounge and fireside spot to their Tasting Room.

In the spacious Tasting Room, people can relax on the couch and warm up by the wood fire while listening to records from the vinyl record player and enjoying wine tasting flights, with wine also available by the glass or bottle.

The comfortable feel of the tasting room is an intentional décor choice by Candice and Frewin designed to help guests envision themselves in their own homes, with tables of varying heights fillling the space and natural light flooding in from the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the property’s organic vineyards.

Located in the picturesque Carey Gully, CRFT Wines received a five-star rating in the recent 2023 Halliday Wine Companion Awards, so it is definitely one to add to your list of wineries to visit.
