South Australians in the Mid North, Riverland, and Murraylands districts are on high alert as Total Fire Bans come into effect, with the Country Fire Service (CFS) announcing extreme fire danger ratings for Tuesday February 13.
The bans, which are a response to the hazardous fire weather conditions forecasted, will last for 24 hours, starting from midnight tonight until midnight tomorrow.
The declaration of Total Fire Bans across these regions underscores the severe risk posed by the current weather conditions.
The CFS has issued a strong recommendation for residents to activate their Bushfire Survival Plans, emphasizing that leaving early before a fire ignites is the safest option for those without a well-prepared and defendable plan.
In districts where the fire danger rating has reached extreme levels, the safety of houses not fully prepared, constructed, and actively defended during a fire is significantly compromised. The CFS stresses the importance of having a survival plan in place, as essential services such as mains-fed electricity and water supply may be affected by the extreme conditions.
Landowners are urged to comply with local harvest codes of practice, obtainable from their local council, and ensure any burn-off activities conducted today are fully extinguished by the end of the night. The CFS also advises agencies to enact their Total Fire Ban procedures in anticipation of the challenging conditions ahead.
