Traditional woodfired pizzeria Sicily opens third venue in Semaphore

Sicily Pizzeria has expanded with a third venue in Semaphore, serving traditional woodfired pizzas in the seaside suburb.

Semaphore’s foodie scene is in for a treat with the arrival of Sicily Naxos Pizzeria, offering a slice of Sicily tradition in the seaside suburb.

With two other Sicily locations in Rundle Street and Aldinga Beach, owner Cono Gorgone was inspired to open a venue in Semaphore after attending an event there with his family, and realised a wood oven pizzeria was missing from the area.

“I realised there wasn’t a wood oven pizzeria let alone an Italian restaurant on the main drag, so that got me ticking over,” he says.

“I saw this great building and I thought I’d enquire and within a few weeks I was signing the paper for the lease. We started straight away with the refurbishment of the place, I already had a vision with the colours being the terracotta orange and the blue for the sea.”

“We have been fortunate enough to find this site and many of the locals are very happy we have opened in Semaphore.”

“Things are on the road and up and running, we are ready to rock and roll so bring on the summer. “We are going to get some really good looking umbrellas to come for summer and we are really looking forward to it.”

The name ‘Naxos in Sicily’ came about as it was one of the first towns named by the early Greek settlers, Cono’s pizza chef Yanni is of Greek origin and it was also the name of the town in Sicily where his parents came from.

Naxos on Sicily offers 12-inch pizzas and chefs take time to prepare the dough, using traditional kneading techniques and letting it rest for 72 hours. All ingredients used in their dishes are Italian, all the way down to the flour, and the drinks menu is entirely Sicily beverages.

Cono’s passion for wood oven pizza and authentic ingredients shines through the venue, with many dishes on offer including starters, pizzas, pastas and desserts.

“We do things the traditional ways as we have done in the other Sicilys, we have a beautiful wooden oven which is something all the pizzerias have got with the rotating base and stone. We use all Italian ingredients, which means maybe you pay a little bit more but in the end of the day it is the top quality in the ingredients like that that have given our pizzas a good name,” Cono said.

Kick back and relax with a drink in hand and a slice of pizza in the other, with a broad drinks menu including cocktails, wines, spirits, and alcohol free beverages.

People can choose to dine inside the restaurant or get out in the fresh air with alfresco dining out the front, which they are hoping to expand to out the back.
