Tram service suspended for six weekends due to $870M major works

Adelaide’s tram services will face multiple closures from May to August as part of a major infrastructure upgrade.

Over the next few months, major works will be in progress on Adelaide’s tram systems, and services will be temporarily suspended throughout this period. This is due to the ongoing $870 million Tram Grade Separation Projects aimed at upgrading the state’s tram services, while making journeys safer and more efficient.

“The $870 million suite of projects will remove three congested tram level crossings at Plympton and Morphettville, to make travel in the area safer, faster and easier for people who use public transport, walk, cycle or drive,” stated the Department of Transport and Infrastructure.

Between May and August, there will be six weekends when all tram services are closed. While these closures are in place, there will be substitute bus routes in operation to make sure passengers can still get around Adelaide with ease.

The first of the closures will be from 9pm on Saturday, May 3rd, until the last service on Sunday, May 4th. During this time, the whole tram network will be closed. When the trams are down, the substitute bus routes will match the tram timetable, operating every 10 minutes during the day and every 15 to 20 minutes at night. These bus services will stop at all designated tram bus substitute stops.

The next closure will occur from the first to the last service on Sunday, May 11th. From 9pm on Saturday, May 17th, to the last service Sunday, May 18th. From first service on Saturday, May 31st, to last service Sunday, June 1st. From 9pm Saturday, June 21st, to last service Sunday, June 22nd.

There will also be closures from the first service on Saturday, August 2nd, to the last service on Sunday, August 3rd. The following day, partial tram line services will resume between the South Terrace, Entertainment Centre and Botanic Gardens tram stops from first service Monday, August 4th.

Later in the year, from Monday, August 4th, the Glenelg tram line will partially close from Moseley Square to South Terrace. These partial closures are expected to remain in place until late January 2026. Once again, buses will be ready to replace the trams.

“Substitute buses will service commuters who’d usually use the section of tram line between South Terrace and Glenelg. The tram line will be ready for testing and commissioning in late 2025 with services scheduled to resume late January 2026 in time for the return of school.”

Once the Tram Grade Separation Projects are completed, the commuters and the wider community will see a range of new benefits. Along with better connectivity for trams, cyclists, and pedestrians, the project should help alleviate peak-hour congestion, improve traffic flow, create new community open spaces, and more.
