Trick or treat – or trusty companion? RSPCA South Australia is hoping animal lovers come knocking this Halloween with open hearts, ready to take home one of the many fetching felines currently in their care.
The “Adopt-o-Ween” event begins this Friday – October 26 – with a rare twilight opening of the RSPCA’s Lonsdale animal shelter. It will continue through to Halloween on Wednesday October 31.
Head of RSPCA South Australia’s Animal Operations, Tim Charles, said the Halloween special price for adult cats of $31 (reflecting the date Halloween falls) represents nearly a 40% discount on the usual charge.
Making the $31 charge even more appealing is knowing that all adopted animals from the RSPCA come desexed, microchipped and vaccinated – a real treat for future cat owners.
Prospective cat owners looking to take advantage of the discount can view the cats currently available to adopt at www.rspcasa.org.au/adopt-a-pet/cat
“We have around 126 adult cats at our Lonsdale shelter and kitten season is now upon us, so we’re heading towards full capacity,” Mr Charles said.
“We hope this campaign will take some of the pressure off, while also providing people with the opportunity to enjoy – perhaps for the first time – the unique companionship that cats offer.
“With names like Pumpkin, Midnight, Boo and Casper, anyone who adopts during these five days will always remember the time of year they welcomed one of our beautiful cats into their families.”
While cat ownership is a positive experience, it is not for everyone. Mr Charles encouraged people thinking of adopting a cat to learn about the responsibility and commitment required to meet the animal’s physical and emotional needs.
“Many of our cats have already experienced a lot of changes in their lives,” Mr Charles said.
“What they need now are loving forever homes where they can fully settle in and feel safe.
“The positive impact pet ownership has on human health is well proven, so it’s not just animals that benefit when someone decides to adopt from us. It’s a win-win for all.”
