Trengove to Run Olympic Marathon on the Same Day as Fitzy’s 5

After a promising junior athletics career, Jessica Trengove quickly established herself at the top on the South Australian running scene when, after she had only been training again for less than two years, she finished 11th overall and as the first female over the line in Fitzy’s 5.

Fast-forward two years and the rise of Trengove the world of distance running has been nothing short of astonishing. Ordinarily, Jessica Trengove, would be on the starting line for the third annual Fitzy’s 5 to be held Sunday 5 August, but since March, ordinary has been replaced by extraordinary. Her win in the inaugural Fitzy’s 5 saw Trengove record a time of 17 minutes, and on 11 March this year, Trengove put together 8 consecutive 5km segments in under 18 minutes on her way to posting an Olympic A-Qualifying time in the marathon.

Jessica Trengove won’t be on the starting line for this year’s Fitzy’s 5 on Sunday the 5 of August, but she will be toeing the line later that night in the marathon at the London Olympic Games.

To get into the Olympic spirit, Athletics SA is encouraging people to sign up for Fitzy’s 5, South Australia’s largest 5km fun run, starting at 8:30am from the Torrens Parade Ground. The event honours dual Olympian David Fitzsimons, who passed away after battling cancer, and raises money for the Royal Adelaide Hospital Research Foundation.

Athletics SA Executive Director, Adam Bishop, says while Jess is pursuing her Olympic Game dreams, her participation in the inaugural Fitzy’s 5 in 2010 was an important part of her journey and it can be the same for everyone, even without an Olympic Games goal to look forward to.

“Fitzy’s 5 is all about participation and 5km is a distance that everyone can run or walk. We really want to see this event pass the 1000 participants mark this year. It would be great to see the people of Adelaide really get behind Fitzy’s 5 in an Olympic year” says Mr Bishop.

The event will also feature Australian Olympic track and field selector and four time Olympic marathon runner, Steve Moneghetti, who expressed his excitement about returning to participate in Fitzy’s 5 and is encouraging all Adelaidian’s to sign up for the event.

“Let’s all get behind this terrific event and raise funds for the Royal Adelaide Hospital Research Fund, working in the area of cancer research, in the memory of Dave Fitzsimons” says Moneghetti.
