TT3D: Closer to the Edge

Running time: 104 minutes
Rating: PG
Release Date: 20 November 2011

This British documentary vicariously follows the build up to the 2010 Isle of Man’s infamous Tourist Trophy (TT) race. It focuses predominately on the riders, their preparation, determination to compete and win the world’s most dangerous motorcycle race. It is a test for both human and machine as we follow the lives of Ian Hutchinson, John McGuiness, Cameron Donald, Connor Cummins, Paul Dobbs and others.

However the film chooses to centre on the most colourful character on the circuit, 29 year old Guy Martin, complete with Elvis-esque style sideburns. Guy is a lorry mechanic from Lincolnshire plus a showman who loves to play to the camera and the crowds. However Guy is yet to win the TT. He is up against veteran John McGuiness who has won the TT a record 15 times and determined up- and-comer and greatest rival, Ian Hutchinson who has two wins under his belt.

Filmed in 3D by director Richard de Aragues it manages to capture the high speed thrills, spills and adrenaline rush. The film opens with what must be the view of the rider hurtling down the track with their vision scarily limited to a mere few metres ahead and so frighteningly close to the tarmac as they take each corner.

Every year several lives are lost and this year was no exception as we get up close and personal with a grieving widow and her family. Several riders have had near death experiences on the track and yet they all manage to get back on the bike. Even after witnessing their fallen mates the day before the race goes on.

This addiction to the adrenaline and the drive to succeed at all costs is curious and insane at the same time. Narrated by Jared Leto over splices of racing scenes and interviews with the riders and their teammates and families which have been immaculately edited to provide a highly entertaining package.

Motor heads will definitely enjoy this but there is something for everyone, whether it’s the offbeat free spirited Guy Martin or the sheer spectacle or the dissection of the human condition it is a great film to check out.
