Hugged by the Parklands, when Adelaide was first planned there were open gardens and green meeting spaces to enjoy.
Now with an initiative to create a greener, healthier town, City of Adelaide want CBD and North Adelaide residents to know that living in the concrete jungle doesn’t mean you can’t have a green thumb.
If you’re sick of looking at the bare strip of council land beside the footpath and in front of your property, maybe a new nature strip garden will fix the eyesore.
It is an increasingly popular form of gardening and can also be beneficial in social situations.
Lord Mayor of Adelaide, Sandy Verschoor stated on Facebook the benefits of gardens and the role they play in bringing the community together.
“We’ll work with you on the design and even provide plants and turf!” Lord Mayor Verschoor said.
“Council is increasing greening throughout the city and North Adelaide and nature strip gardens are an excellent way of getting to know your neighbours, boosting your sense of community and bringing more greenery to our city.”
Before you start your new green project, as the land owner, the City of Adelaide will need to assess and approve your proposal, so don’t start before checking with council!
Wanting to get a start on the newly approved nature strip garden, but strapped for cash at the moment? Don’t sweat it.
City of Adelaide will help assist with the design ideas and horticultural advice based on landscaping guidelines.
Along with the design help, there will also be a supply of initial plants, soil, mulch, new instant turf to kick-start your project, along with supplying conduit (PVC pipe) from the nature strip to the property boundary only for irrigation.
If this nature strip garden project tickles your green thumb, you can apply here.
