When we think of iconic Australian desserts, there’s one thing that trumps the Tim Tams, fairy bread and Pavlova. It’s the soft, fluffy sponge cake covered in chocolate icing and rolled in coconut, yes, that’s right, lamingtons.
Luckily, the best lamingtons in Australia can be found right here in South Australia, just in time for the January long weekend and back-to-school lunches. The owners of Kytons Bakery, Sharon and Darren Sutton, along with their team, are ready to get back into the swing of things, making thousands of lamingtons after a well-deserved holiday break.
“This upcoming long weekend, we’re celebrating all the good things about being Australian with friends and family. Why not celebrate with a stash of delicious Kytons lamingtons?” Sharon said. “Buying local and supporting local is, after all, the Aussie way.”
“Our pursuit of quality means we use the best ingredients, follow traditional recipes and take great care in our baking.”

It’s no secret that commitment pays off. Their traditional lamingtons have twice taken out first prize at the National Baking Awards in the lamington category, firmly placing them among the best in the country.
“We always select premium quality ingredients and source them from right here in Australia as much as possible, knowing that you would do the same if you were baking for yourself at home,” she said.
They may as well be baked at home, as all the lamingtons are created on site at their bakehouse and shop in Edwardstown, which is tucked just behind Castle Plaza Shopping Centre. If you can’t make it out in person, Kytons are making it easy, just check the fridge section of the bakery department at your local Drakes, Foodland, gourmet fruit and veg store, Woolworths or Coles Local.
“This dedication to excellence is why Kytons lamingtons are a staple in the fridge section of your local supermarket’s bakery department,” Sharon says.

The small but mighty sponge square is also a win for school lunchboxes. “They freeze perfectly,” Sharon said. “Making them an easy grab during the back-to-school rush of uniforms, stationery and early mornings.”
Traditional chocolate lamingtons are always a win for the kids, but Kytons invite you to be adventurous and try their whole award-winning range, which also includes Coffee, Raspberry and Mini Lamingtons.
The bakery is a family-run operation, and has been bringing Adelaide not only Lamingtons but also other delicious, freshly baked products for over 87 years (Sharon tells us their equally famous hot cross buns will be available from mid-February). If you visit their retail store at Edwardstown, you’ll also find hot pies and pasties, coffee, cold drinks and the full range of Kytons products.
From before you reach the door to Kytons Bakery, the smells we all know and love about a bakery, touches the senses, drawing in customers potentially looking for the perfect piece of lamington.
