It’s an unbelievably high standard to achieve a Michelin Star and a label that chefs and restaurants around the world strive for as an ultimate goal. No tyre company has found itself with as much influence in the food industry; now it’s rolled out a new category, Michelin Keys. Keys are handed out to the most outstanding hotels in the world, and in the introductory year, two separate South Australian hotels have been handed two keys each.
The first dramatically (literally) rose from the ashes following the devastating Kangaroo Island fires of 2020. Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island proved itself as one of the most luxurious, immense, and remarkable stays in the country. Its ability to meld into the rugged limestone clifftops amongst wild greenery is purposeful and truly unique.

The second, Stirling’s Thorngrove Manor sits amongst sweeping garden paths and meticulously manicured hedges. A combination of architectural art and timeless romance, the manor is an impressive castle escape defined by privacy and attention to detail.
Both awarded two Michelin Keys, meaning “an exceptional stay,” the properties were judged thoroughly on five universal criteria. According to Michelin, these criteria are “excellence in architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the neighbourhood or setting.”
In total 35 Australian hotels made the list, with New South Wales receiving keys for 14 different properties. Queensland was the only Australian state to receive three keys for a single property: Lizard Island Resort on the reef-ringed Lizard Island.
For South Australia though, it’s a proud moment, and we’re certain there are plenty more luxurious, state-of-the-art, fantastical properties around the state to receive keys in coming years.
