Two major pools at the new Adelaide Aquatic Centre filled for the first time

Two of the major pools at the new Adelaide Aquatic Centre have been filled with water for the first time – the 50-metre and Learn to Swim indoor pools.

Two of the major pools at the new Adelaide Aquatic Centre have been filled with water for the first time. The 50-metre indoor pool and the Learn to Swim indoor pool were filled over several days in an important test to ensure the pools can hold water properly. Together, these two pools hold nearly three million litres of water.

The construction of the Adelaide Aquatic Centre is moving forward with great speed. Recently, the foundations for the 50-metre pool, the Learn to Swim pool, and the Warm Water/Rehabilitation pool have all been completed. These pools will play key roles in the new facility, which is designed to serve both competitive athletes and the general public.

The 50-metre indoor pool, with 10 lanes, will be a top-tier venue for training, swimming competitions, water sports, and recreational swimming. While the Warm Water/Rehabilitation pool will offer a peaceful space for therapeutic aquatic exercises, rehabilitation, and relaxation, with temperatures maintained between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius year-round.

Construction is also progressing on other pools at the site, including the indoor splash zone, outdoor lagoon, and a 25-metre pool, with work set to continue into the new year. The centre will feature a range of facilities, including water slides, splash zones, spacious lawns for recreation, and a fully-equipped gym. There will also be a dedicated relaxation area with a sauna, steam room, and upgraded change rooms.

The Adelaide Aquatic Centre will be a model of sustainability, powered entirely by renewable energy and built with locally-sourced, low-carbon materials. This commitment to the environment is paired with a dedication to local job creation, as over 1,500 jobs will be supported throughout the project.

During the construction period, over 100 swim groups and more than 2,000 learn-to-swim students have been using other pools in Adelaide, such as the Thebarton Aquatic Centre, which was refurbished earlier this year. The new Adelaide Aquatic Centre is set to open in the summer of 2025-26, offering a state-of-the-art facility for swimmers of all ages and abilities.

“This is a sustainably designed swimming centre, being built responsibly using locally sourced, low-carbon materials wherever possible. It’s a win for local jobs and a win for the environment,” Tom Koutsantonis MP, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, said.

“To see the pools filled with water during this testing phase really builds the excitement for next summer when the pools will also be filled with locals enjoying the brand-new centre,” Lucy Hood, Member for Adelaide, said.
