If your car boot is home to a few forgotten bags of quality clothes you’ve been meaning to drop at the op shop for months, this one’s for you. The Australian Red Cross has joined forces with Uber to make it easier than ever to donate pre-loved clothing without leaving the house or office.
On Saturday 18 October, between 10am and 4pm, Adelaide residents can open the Uber app, request a free clothing pickup, and hand their donation bags to a driver who will deliver them straight to Red Cross.
No fees, no queues, and no more guilt every time you open the boot.
The idea came after new research revealed that many Australians want to give more but find the process too tricky to fit into their daily lives. Nearly two-thirds of people surveyed said they’d happily donate more often if it were simpler.
Between confusion about where to take things and the effort it takes to actually do it, too many good intentions end up hidden in the car or gathering dust in the laundry.
Richard Wood from the Australian Red Cross says the partnership is about making generosity simple.
“Australians care deeply about helping others, but life gets in the way. We wanted to remove the hardest part and bring the donation bin to your doorstep,” he says.
All clothes collected will go directly to Red Cross stores and sorting centres, where they’ll be resold, reused, or recycled to raise money for community programs. The drive also shines a light on sustainable fashion, reminding us that giving clothes a second life is one of the easiest ways to reduce waste.
So if your wardrobe has outgrown itself or your donation pile is starting to look permanent, now’s your chance to get your space back and feel good doing it.
Gather your pre-loved clothes and accessories into a bag or box weighing under 20 kilograms. Then confirm your booking and let your driver do the rest.
- Open the Uber or Uber Eats app.
- Scroll until you see the Red Cross Clothing Drive image and tap.
- Check that ‘Red Cross Clothing Drive’ is listed as the drop-off point.
- If you’re in an eligible city, you’ll see the trip showing as $0.
