Unemployment scare eased at GFG

GFG Alliance secures ongoing finance after scares earlier in the year that the corporation may close.

Whyalla has received great news that GFG Alliance has secured ongoing finance for GFG Australian businesses.

It was touch and go for a while, with Whyalla Steelworks workers left uncertain of their employment future earlier this year as the deadline to find refinancing neared.

The SA Government welcomed the announcement today and South Australian Premier, Steven Marshall said it was an important step for the Whyalla community.

“The workers of Whyalla deserve enormous credit for the recent, much improved performance of the Whyalla Steelworks, which has contributed to this refinancing,” Marshall said.

“Our Government remains a steadfast supporter of the people of Whyalla, the local Council and of course the steelworks and the Middleback Ranges mining operations.”

“The South Australian and Federal governments have worked closely together to give potential financiers the confidence to back Whyalla.”

Marshall said the GFG Alliance Executive Charman, Sanjeev Gupta regards Whyalla as his ‘spiritual home’, and the refinancing is a result of his dedication to the cause.

“I am sure his faith in the future of the city and the steelworks has driven his determination to seek this second re-financing of the operations,” Marshall said.

“This is the outcome all South Australians were hoping for and I look forward to the Whyalla Steelworks continuing its transformation as a key employer in Whyalla and the Iron Triangle.”
