UnitingCare Pancake Day 2011

The tempting aroma of freshly cooked pancakes will fill the suburbs and towns of South Australia next Tuesday, the 8th of March, as groups across the state don their aprons, dust off their frypans and get flipping for a great cause at UnitingCare’s ninth annual Pancake Day.

Traditionally, Shrove Tuesday is the last day to eat all the flour, eggs and dairy products in your kitchen before the start of Lent which is a time of abstinence and reflection in the 40 days before Easter. The European custom of making pancakes on Shrove Tuesday was one way to use up these ‘luxury’ items and over the centuries, Shrove Tuesday and pancakes became perfect partners.

“We already have more than 300 eager groups including schools, businesses, churches and community organisations who have signed up to join in the fun of Pancake Day 2011 but we hope for hundreds more,” said Alice MacFarlane, Event Manager.

“Pancakes will be exchanged for gold coin donations at participating events state-wide. All money raised will help local UnitingCare agencies provide practical support to South Australians in need including those without a home, people living with disabilities, vulnerable children and adults, older people and families in crisis,” said Alice.

There’s still plenty of time for people to register an event online at sa.pancakeday.com.au or by free-calling 1800 060 543. All groups will receive a free event kit which includes celebrity recipes, competition opportunities, an event planning guide and promotional materials – balloons, posters, stickers and postcards.

Alongside events held state-wide, UnitingCare will host a launch event on Tuesday 8 March in the heart of Adelaide city. Come and visit them outside Pilgrim Uniting Church (12 Flinders St) anytime between 8.00am – 2.30pm to enjoy a delicious pancake. The event will feature local celebrities, a cooking class, pancake flipping race, and of course a very special guest – Penny Pancake!
