Local Unley cafe fave A Mother’s Milk is now catering to more than just the usual brunch crowd with their new function space. Now opening in the evenings with functions, the cafe is ready to welcome you with great indoor and outdoor spaces for up to 100 people.
The renovations were completed earlier this year, including both indoor and outdoor areas, and they’re fully licensed. The owners knocked down the main wall and moved the bar into a space at the front of the shop, or the back of the shop, depending on your entry point, creating a more open space that feels warm and is more aesthetically pleasing. They also created soft seating along one side, which is great for functions and gives the place a completely different look and feel that is cozy and welcoming.

Owner Tania Serhan says they’re pretty stoked with their new space. “I love it!” She says the renovation were a complete overhaul, but they still kept some of their favourite features of the place. “We didn’t want to get rid of the bricks – that was a beautiful feature – so we made that stand out more and the space is now more comfortable and inviting.”
The new space is such a contrast to their previous fit-out, even the regulars feel like they’re in a completely different shop.
“A lot of people still walk in and think they’re in the wrong shop because of the placement of the bar where it was, in comparison to where it is now, and it looks really amazing,” says Tania.
So, what is A Mother’s Milk all about? Tania says the cafe focuses on decent portions and wholesome ingredients.
“It’s big serves,” says Tania. “It’s real ingredients, not like someplace where you find all this decoration and ‘wow’ factor, but then when you go to eat the meal, there’s not much on the plate.”
Big serves and local ingredients? Yes, please! A Mother’s Milk also aims to be a more ethical cafe with their free-range egg dishes and their focus on nutritious home-cooking. Hot on the menu are traditional meals like bacon and eggs, to more adventurous dishes like Portuguese sardines, and the chef’s special brekkie congee.
“We’re about fresh, home-made ingredients,” says Tania, who bakes all their own goods, including their truly drool-worthy muffins and banana bread. The protein balls that make your mouth water with keen anticipation? Yep, they’re made in-store, too, and Tania says they have become somewhat famous for this particular menu item.

When it comes to function food, the options are endless, and include grazing tables, a la carte dining, canapes or cocktail food, and even corporate catering.
Looking for somewhere to host your birthday or wedding party? A Mother’s Milk has you covered.
