The City of Unley has announced plans to lower Unley Road’s speed limit to 50km/h in an effort to improve safety for all road users. The change was announced on the council’s website and social media platforms, with expectations that it will encourage a “more pedestrian-friendly environment”.
The limit change will start Wednesday February 12th with the council expecting a 50km/h limit to decrease the risk of accidents and their severity, providing a safer environment for cyclists, and making sure that crossings are safe and inviting for pedestrians to use
The City of Unley also believes this is an opportunity for local businesses to flourish, stating that “lower traffic speeds make business precincts more approachable for customers”. “The more pedestrian-friendly environment encourages people to slow down, explore, and support local shops, cafes, and services”.
Unley Road is home to a range of local businesses, retailers and establishments, including the main Unley Shopping centre, and many reputable cafe and dining experiences such as the Unley rooftop bar and restaurant, La Scala Cafe & Pizzeria, serving Italian cuisine, and Dolly, known for its curated drink list and contemporary fine dining space. As a busy suburban hub, Unley has a lot to offer, and many businesses and family owned restaurants such as these will be positively impacted by the speed decrease.
This news also comes after the anticipated Unley Central project was announced last September, with plans revealed to develop a new precinct including six cinemas, retail and cafe openings, as well as 130 apartments. This future development, aimed at increasing Unley’s urban liveability, is bound to benefit from the safety created though this speed limit change.
Despite the speed decrease, there is expected to be a minimal impact on travel time for road users, meaning that those commuting through Unley road need not worry about a major impact on current traffic conditions. The City of Unley advises all road users to “watch out for the updated signs and make sure to adjust your speed for a safer journey.”
