Upcoming closures on Outer Harbor line for station upgrades

Temporary partial closures are set on the Outer Harbor line from September 29 to October 7 due to the Ethelton Railway Station Upgrade Project.

Adelaide Metro has announced a series of temporary partial closures on the Outer Harbor line to facilitate ongoing construction at Ethelton Railway Station. This disruption, which begins later this month, forms part of the comprehensive upgrade project necessitating these temporary service adjustments.

Starting from Sunday, 29 September, the line will undergo partial nightly closures from 7pm until the last service each evening, continuing until Friday, 4 October. The closures will pick up again over the October long weekend, spanning from the first service on Saturday, 5 October until the last service on Monday, 7 October.

During these specified times, train services between Woodville Railway Station and Outer Harbor Railway Station will be suspended. Additionally, Port Dock services connecting Adelaide Railway Station with Port Dock Railway Station will not run during these night periods.

To aid passengers affected by the disruptions, substitute bus services will be operational. These buses will cover all stops traditionally serviced by trains between Woodville, Port Dock, and Outer Harbor Railway stations. For passengers utilising the Grange line, services will remain unaffected with trains operating as scheduled between Adelaide Railway Station and Grange Railway Station throughout the duration of the disruptions. Also, during the October long weekend, Port Dock services will operate without change.

The necessity for closures stems from the Ethelton Railway Station Upgrade Project. The project, valued at $9.9 million, aims to enhance the station’s usability and safety with the introduction of new platforms designed for better accessibility. As a result, the construction work cannot be carried out while the train lines are operational within the rail corridor.

The project promises to improve passenger safety and experience, while also supporting employment, giving rise to 20 full time equivalent positions throughout its construction phase. Completion of the project is expected by late October.

Efforts have been made to schedule the construction work at times that would minimise the inconvenience to daily commuters. This planning includes aligning heavier workloads to night times and over the long weekend to mitigate significant impacts.

Train services are scheduled to resume regular operations starting from the first service on Tuesday, 8 October 2024.
