This year, Adelaide has seen incredible light shows, and there are no cosmic plans for them to stop. Although July was jam packed with incredible displays, August will not disappoint, starting the month of with a bang.
This weekend, get ready for the dazzling Perseid meteor shower, which will light up the skies on Sunday August 11th and Monday August 12th. The shower will reach its peak around midnight on Sunday, with excellent viewing conditions extending into Monday.
As space.com puts it, “The Perseid meteor shower is one of the best shooting star displays of the year.” Set to light-up around midnight, the dark skies provide a perfect stage for this annual event, making it a perfect weekend show for star gazers.
With the Andamooka Observatory holding overnight tours with local guides Leila and Conan, this is a great opportunity for a last minute road trip to the far north of South Australia with family and friends.
If you’re unable to visit Andamooka to view this spectacular show, The Planetary Show recommends getting away from the city lights as much as possible and visiting the darkest place you can, giving your eyes time to adjust to the darkness and allowing you to watch the meteor shower the best way you can.
With the Perseid radian approximately north on the sky’s dome, it is best to be viewed from the Northen Hemisphere. Look toward the constellation Perseus, since the radiant of this shower is beside this constellation.
