Commuters using the Outer Harbor rail line will face temporary partial closures between Woodville Railway Station and Outer Harbor starting next month. These changes are due to the ongoing works on the Ethelton Railway Station Upgrade Project. The Department of Infrastructure has announced a series of night and weekend closures of the line during July.
The scheduled partial closures will occur from 7:30pm until the last service each weeknight from Monday, 8 July to Friday, 12 July. Subsequent interruptions will follow from Sunday, 14 July to Friday, 19 July during the same hours. Additionally, full weekend line closures are planned from 7:30pm on Friday, 5 July until the last service on Sunday, 7 July, and will repeat from Friday, 26 July to Sunday, 28 July.
To mitigate the inconvenience caused by these closures, substitute bus services will be in operation. These buses will cover all stations from Woodville to Outer Harbor, ensuring that passengers can complete their journeys during the disruptions.
The decision to close the line temporarily is linked to the requirements of the $9.9 million station upgrade. It includes the construction of new, more accessible platform surfaces and ramps. Modernisation of these facilities aims to significantly improve passenger safety and accessibility.
The Ethelton Railway Station itself will be out of operation from Monday, 1 July to Monday, 28 October. During this period, passengers are advised to use the nearby Glanville Railway Station. The prolonged station closure facilitates extensive demolition and construction activities, which are not feasible while maintaining regular train operations in the area.
The Department of Infrastructure explained the necessity of closures stating that, “These works cannot be safely undertaken with trains operating in the rail corridor, and have been scheduled to minimise impacts on weekday commuters.” Assurance was provided that Outer Harbor line train services will still operate between Adelaide Railway Station and Woodville Station, seamlessly connecting with the substitute bus services during closures.
Similarly, Grange line services will be unaffected and continue as usual between Adelaide Railway Station and Grange Railway Station.
The ongoing Ethelton Railway Station Upgrade Project began last week and is projected to foster economic benefits by supporting 20 full-time equivalent jobs throughout the construction period. Completion of the upgrading project is expected by late October, ushering in enhanced facilities that will elevate the overall commuter experience.
