$6.2 million Hindmarsh junction upgrade now open to traffic

The $6.2 million upgrade at Hindmarsh’s Manton Street and Adam Street junction is complete, offering improved traffic flow and safety features for over 700,000 annual visitors to the area’s major events.

The Manton Street and Adam Street junction at Hindmarsh is now operational following a comprehensive $6.2 million upgrade. This development has enhanced the safety of the area, particularly benefiting the high amounts of traffic in the area. The junction provides critical access to the local sporting, entertainment, and recreational precincts.

The newly completed junction includes the addition of a second city-bound left turn lane from Manton Street into Adam Street, aiming to reduce traffic congestion. To improve safety for pedestrians during heavily attended events, new variable speed limit signs have been installed on Manton Street. These signs will adjust the speed limits based on real-time traffic conditions, ensuring pedestrian safety during peak event times.

The design also features upgraded pedestrian crossings to offer safer and more accessible pathways for pedestrians. A dedicated cyclist-indented hook turn facility has been introduced to facilitate right-turning cyclists from Manton Street onto Adam Street.

Tom Koutsantonis said, “The new and improved Manton Street and Adam Street junction is not only a win for western suburbs motorists, but for everyone who loves to attend events at the sporting and entertainment precinct – such as tonight’s doubleheader at Coopers Stadium.”

“This is a very popular area of our state, with more than 600,000 people attending events at Hindmarsh and the Adelaide Entertainment Centre each year, and another 100,000 attending the Riverbank Christmas display each year,” said Koutsantonis.

This upgrade will reduce congestion and alleviate that frustrating bottleneck of traffic on the extension to Grange Road, while also making it safer for pedestrians and cyclists to access the precinct.”

The upgrade was carried out by South Australian construction firm Bardavcol, which supported approximately 30 jobs during the construction phase. This project is part of a broader initiative to enhance key intersections near the River Torrens to Darlington Project, ensuring the Adelaide road network operates efficiently during and after this major construction project.

The revitalised junction is expected to make a notable difference in managing the traffic flows associated with the large-scale events that characterise this vibrant part of Adelaide. The construction is set to improve the overall effectiveness of the city’s transport infrastructure, facilitating smoother travel and better access across the metropolitan area.
