As the city prepares for the excitement of the Vailo Adelaide 500 kicking off next week on the 23rd of November, significant road closures are set to begin tomorrow, Friday, 17th November, prompting the RAA advising motorists to plan their journeys into the city carefully.
The closures, necessitated by the upcoming motor race, will affect several major roads east of the CBD for the next two weeks. Key thoroughfares like Payneham Road, Magill Road, Kensington Road, and Greenhill Road are expected to experience delays.
RAA Senior Manager of Safety and Infrastructure, Charles Mountain, highlighted the importance of planning for these disruptions.
‘We’re encouraging motorists to jump on the website and familiarise themselves with the road closures to ensure they don’t get caught up as the closures will increase travel times on nearby roads, particularly during the peak period’, Mr Mountain said. ‘If you need to drive to work or get into the city, our advice is to leave earlier and allow at an extra 20 minutes for your journey.’
The impact of these closures extends to several roads, with Mountain noting, ‘Nearby roads such as Greenhill Road, Kensington Road, North Terrace, Portrush Road and even Glynburn Road will be slower and more congested. Being stuck in traffic can be frustrating, but we want everyone to exercise patience and look after all road users so everyone can get home safely.’
Furthermore, Mountain suggests alternative transport methods to alleviate congestion with commuters who head east-west in the morning, considering leaving their car at home. ‘This may be a good opportunity to try catching public transport, cycling, walking, or simply working from home’, he advised.
The RAA will continue to monitor road congestion and provide updates throughout the closure period, aiming to assist motorists with the latest information.
The following is a list of the major road closures:
- Wakefield Road: Friday 17 November (6:00 am) – Thursday 30 November (6:00 am)
- Dequetteville Terrace: Friday 17 November (6:00 am) – Tuesday 28 November (6:00 am)
- Bartels Road: Friday 17 November (6:00 am) – Tuesday 28 November (6:00 am)
- Hutt Street (Pirie/Bartels to Ifould Street): Friday 17 November (6:00 am) – Tuesday 28 November (6:00 am)
- Fullarton Road: Friday 17 November (6:00 am) – Tuesday 28 November (6:00 am)
As the city gears up for the Vailo Adelaide 500, these road closures are a necessary aspect of the preparations, and the RAA’s advice could be key in helping motorists navigate this period with minimal disruption.
