Variety On King William To Raise Money For SA Kids Affected By Domestic Violence

On top of being Adelaide’ premier fashion long lunch, Variety On King William will be supporting a very important cause this October.

Variety on King William has today announced that the popular food and fashion event will raise money for the silent victims of domestic violence this Christmas – our SA kids.

Now in its fifth year, the event has supported Variety SA – the Children’s Charity since it’s inception. This year the event hopes to raise $20K taking the total raised over the last five years to more than $60,000. Unfortunately, domestic violence knows no social or economic boundaries. One in four Australian women have experienced physical or sexual violence by a partner and of those women who experience violence, more than half have children in their care.

Variety SA CEO, Mark McGill said that last year Variety SA granted more than $30,000 to assist the children in domestic violence centers across Adelaide and that more than 1000 children were forced to flee their homes around Christmas time due to family violence, often with little or no belongings.

“It’s so sad to see children go through an unplanned, traumatic life changing upheaval in what is traditionally a time for celebration. If we can assist these children to have some sense of festivity and normality during such a difficult transitional period, it can have positive repercussions that are life changing. For some SA kids, this may be their only gift or acknowledgement of the festive season,” he said.

Closer to the home of the event, the Eastern Adelaide Domestic Violence Service and the Western Adelaide Domestic Violence Service last year supported 923 clients, 440 of these were children.
Mr McGill went onto say that these numbers were staggering.

“We receive requests for help right up to Christmas Day. They need money for food, gifts and accommodation to house the children during this time of fear and uncertainty. The fact that we are able to help is due to the sheer generosity of people at events like Variety on King William and other event programs we are associated with. To say with are thankful for their support would be an understatement,” he said.

This year for the first time, the Variety on King William raffle will be open for sale starting today in a bid to reach this year’s fundraising target.

With the princely support of raffle donors such as Singapore Airlines and Perchalla & Turmer Travel Associates, through to very generous donations by King William Road traders such as Move Over Menswear, Karrans on Hyde Park and Tomich Wines – people will not only be supporting this great cause, but will be in the running to win some amazing prizes, including a luxury getaway to Shanghai. (Please see raffle fact sheet below and a list of al the partners.)

John Karran, Chairman of the Variety on King William Steering Group and owner of Karrans of Hyde Park said that $5 will be donated from every ticket sold and that once again this event demonstrates the very best of the road – especially the trader’s generosity, with each participating trader making a private donation as well.

“Not only will every trader who is involved in some way make a donation to Variety SA, but people like Craig and Sophia from Move Over Menswear are just some of the faces who are working tirelessly behind the scenes to help us to reach our fundraising target this year – we really hope the public get behind us and support this great fundraising initiative,” John said.

The raffle is open to everyone who meets the terms and conditions. To purchase a ticket you simply need to go visit http://www.bitly.com/VKWraffle.
