Adelaide City Council is hosting a Free Family Fun Day on Sunday 16 December from 11 am to 3 pm to celebrate the official opening of the Bonython Park Activity Hub.
The first stage of Council’s vision for transforming Bonython Park into a vibrant family friendly and inclusive space is now complete and there’s something for everyone.
The Family Fun Day includes an array of programmed activities including train rides, aqua balls, come and try sessions, performances, entertainment, demonstrations and an animal petting display.
The Bonython Park Activity Hub includes a new children’s playspace and a ‘mock roadway’ for children to learn road safety skills whilst having fun on their bikes.
Designed to be an interactive and interesting play space for children of all ages and abilities, some of the special features include a 25 metre flying fox, basket and hammock swings, a wheel chair accessible merry-go-round, waist height water and sand play area, and a large net climbing dome.
At 1 pm Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood will declare the park officially open by testing out the slippery dip built for two with his son Oliver.
“It’s the design of this playground that sets it apart. It has an experience-based design which means it is inclusive of children regardless of needs, age or ability,” said Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood.
“With the refurbished model boat pond, SAPOL’s Road Safety School and access to the Park Lands Trail all close by, there’s certainly lots to do.”
New barbecue facilities, picnic tables, plenty of shade and landscaping mean visitors can stay for as much or little time as they wish.
The Activity Hub’s play space was developed with assistance from the State Government’s Open Space Grant Program of $867,000, the Federal Government’s Accessible Communities Program $100,000 and a further Federal Government grant of $51,000.
Overlooking the River Torrens, and sign posted by a giant colourful totem pole, the redevelopment breathes life into the park. Being so close to the heart of the city, people can ride their bikes or park their cars in town and catch a tram to the opening.
Planning Minister John Rau said this example is part of the city-wide redevelopment being supported by the Government adding another exciting dimension running from Bowden Village through the riverside precinct to the current Royal Adelaide Hospital.
