Victor Harbor’s coastal winds may blow cold as winter hits in June, but they bring with them something truly magical, the return of the Southern Right Whales and the much-loved Winter Whale Fest.
Running from June 1 to 30, this month-long celebration transforms Victor into a hub of oceanic wonder, local storytelling and community spirit to mark the yearly migration of whales to the Fleurieu Peninsula.
Now in its third year, Winter Whale Fest is about whale watching, but it’s also a deeper invitation to connect with sea and sky, science and culture, play and purpose. With over 25 events across the calendar, the event threads together art, conservation, Indigenous culture and hands-on discovery in a specially curated and fun-filled engaging way.

So, what can you expect?
For the curious, the creative and the conservation-minded, there’s something for everyone. The program has everything from guided tours to art exhibitions, a free family-friendly artisan market at the charming Railway Plaza, drawing workshops and paint and sips, lantern workshops, behind the scenes experiences at the Victor Harbor Tramway, and many more.
One of the festival’s key events is its respectful and moving opening weekend. The Welcoming of the Whales and Smoking Ceremony on June 7, led by Ramindjeri and Ngarrindjeri Elders, sets a powerful tone, reminding people that the waters hold stories beyond the festivities.

The Victor Harbor Artisan Market will deliver a hit of wintery festivity, with live music, delicious food, and an opportunity to connect with the community and support local makers. There are even whale-spotting boat tours, led by marine biologists keen to dive deep and share their knowledge on everything whale. Is there anything better than strolling a market, warm cuppa in hand, in the brisk winter air?
Adding more colour to the calendar is “Water People 2025 – Water on Country,” a stunning visual arts project curated by Ngarrindjeri artist Amanda Westley. The exhibition explores the sacred and ecological importance of water through the eyes of First Nations artists.
While the whales are the headliners, it’s the community of Victor Harbor that gives the festival its soul. Local businesses join the action with themed menus, pop-up events and ocean-inspired specials, creating a town-wide embrace of the cooler season.
More than a spectacle and more than just whale watching, the Winter Whale Fest is a celebration of connection – to country, to community, and to the majestic creatures just beyond the shoreline.
As proud festival state dwellers, we know that the action doesn’t slow with the weather. Whether you’re just looking for a roadtrip or a whale lover counting down the days in your calendar, there’s no better excuse to rug up, head south and celebrate the annual migration of whales to the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Making a weekend of it? Explore the Beachside Market and Farmers Market running in June alongside the Artisan Market, just remember to bring tote bags for all the crafty bits and bobs you’ll find. Wander, taste, and take home a piece of Victor Harbor.
