If ship burnings, axe throwing and markets sound like your ideal weekend, then there’s a new festival rolling into town that you won’t want to miss this winter.
The Dark Ages are heading to Victor Harbor in June, with a brand-new Viking-inspired festival set to transform a slice of the town into a world of warriors, mead and fire. The inaugural Valhalla Festival will take over Kent Reserve with two days of Norse-inspired fun, entertainment and immersive experiences, all leading up to a dramatic Viking ship burning on Saturday night.
The festival will be a celebration of Viking culture, bringing together merchants, musicians, artisans and warriors for a weekend of feasting, trading and entertainment by the sea. Festivalgoers can test their Viking skills with hands-on axe throwing sessions, browse market stalls packed with medieval-inspired wares, or simply enjoy the atmosphere with food, drinks and live performances across the weekend.
One of the festival’s biggest drawcards will be the appearance of Fringe favourites INFERNO – The Show, who will ignite the shoreline with a fiery sunset performance before setting a purpose-built Viking ship ablaze. Inspired by traditional Viking rituals and European fire festivals, the dramatic ship burning is expected to become the centrepiece of the event.
Adding to the fun will be a lineup of quirky traders and creators bringing their own slice of Viking culture to Victor Harbor.
Deb’s Dresses & Dragons will have handcrafted costumes for anyone wanting to fully commit to the medieval aesthetic, and The Tartan Rose will offer an eclectic collection of pagan, gothic and Viking-style treasures.
For those wanting to embrace the rugged Viking look, Red Beard Australia will be hosting a beard competition across the weekend, complete with beard oils, grooming products and prizes for the best Norse-inspired facial hair.
With all this planned and more, the Valhalla Festival is shaping up to be one of the Fleurieu’s most unexpected new events, offering something a little different from the usual winter calendar. So whether you’re keen to channel your inner Viking warrior, throw an axe, sip mead by the fire or simply witness a giant burning ship lighting up the night sky, Victor Harbor’s newest festival might just be worth the raid.
