Vincent Tarzia elected as new leader of the SA Liberal Party, pledges bold changes ahead of 2026 election

Vincent Tarzia has taken the helm of the South Australian Liberal Party, promising a fresh direction and strong opposition against the incumbent government. His focus? Alleviating the growing cost of living pressures by 2026.

Vincent Tarzia has been elected as the Leader of the South Australian Liberal Party, marking a new chapter in the party’s leadership and setting the stage for the upcoming 2026 State Election.

During a meeting held in the Terrace Room on Monday, 12 August 2024, members of the Liberal Party’s parliamentary group cast their votes, resulting in Tarzia securing the position with 18 votes. His closest competitor, Shadow Attorney-General Josh Teague, received four votes. John Gardner will continue in his role as Deputy Leader of the Opposition.

Following his election, Vincent Tarzia addressed the media and his party, stating his honour and privilege at being chosen to lead. He highlighted his commitment to steering the party in a “new and exciting direction” while ensuring they effectively scrutinise and challenge the actions of the current Malinauskas Labor Government.

Tarzia criticised the Labor government’s management, specifically targeting Premier Peter Malinauskas’ handling of issues such as healthcare services and financial pressures faced by South Australians. He accused the Premier of exacerbating cost of living issues, further driven by unfulfilled promises.

“The Liberal Party is ready to demonstrate that we are a capable, effective, and trustworthy alternative government,” Tarzia declared. He pledged to focus on alleviating the financial stresses on residents, criticizing the Labor government for their failure to deliver promised cost of living relief.

Tarzia expressed his determination to reclaim government in the 2026 elections, reflecting a strong belief in the Liberal Party’s potential to govern once again.

Tarzia said, “The Liberal Party is committed to showing South Australians that we are a strong, effective, and reliable alternate government ahead of the 2026 State Election.

“We can’t forget that Peter Malinauskas and Labor committed the biggest electoral fraud in state history by promising South Australians they would ‘fix ramping’.

“We know South Australians are struggling to make ends meet because of enormous cost of living pressures – and every time Peter Malinauskas opens his mouth the situation gets even worse for those already battling.

“Peter Malinauskas promised the world before he was elected, but the reality is the typical South Australian family is more than $20,000 worse off and Labor and the Premier have no plan for cost of living relief.

“This is a new era for the Liberal Party and I will work my hardest to lead us to success at the 2026 State Election because I truly believe we can win

Tarzia acknowledged his predecessor, David Speirs, commending his contributions and describing him as a “warrior for the Liberal Party.”

With these developments, the South Australian Liberal Party aims to revitalise its strategies and policies under Tarzia’s leadership, focusing on holding the current government accountable and outlining a viable plan for the future economic and social advancement of South Australia.

This shift in leadership comes at a critical time for the Liberal Party as they reposition themselves ahead of the next state election, aiming to regain the trust and support of the electorate amid challenging economic conditions.
