South Australian Liberal leader Vincent Tarzia will step aside from the party’s top job today. The move brings an end to speculation about internal tensions ahead of the March 2026 state election. His resignation becomes effective at 5pm today.
A vote will take place in coming days to decide the new leader of the SA Liberal Party.
The decision follows what has been described as an extended period weighing the demands of leading the opposition against his responsibilities to his electorate and his young family.
His exit comes after internal polling suggested risk of significant losses if the current trend carries into the upcoming election. It appears Shadow Health spokesperson Ashton Hurn is the most likely replacement.
Tarzia has led the party since August 2024, following the resignation of David Speirs. He has confirmed he will continue on as member for Hartley.
The South Australian Liberal Party has issued a statement thanking Tarzia for his leadership. It said he took on the role under difficult circumstances and faced each day with determination. The statement described his decision as one made in the interests of his family, constituents, and the party.
“On behalf of all Liberal Party members I pay tribute to Vincent’s unwavering dedication to what is the hardest job in public life,” Senator Leah Blyth said.
“Vincent’s decision today is testament to his character and the fact he is a team player who always puts others before himself, whether that is his family, his community or his colleagues. Thank you, Vincent.”
State Director Alexander Hyde said Tarzia worked with integrity every day during his time as leader. “His work ethic is second to none and we look forward to continuing to support Vincent in the Liberal campaign to retain the seat of Hartley at the next election.”
Deputy Leader Josh Teague said Tarzia’s decision had been made with “immense grace and humility”. He praised Tarzia’s continued commitment to public service and confirmed the party will meet in the coming days to vote on a new Leader. The vote is expected to take place on Monday morning.
