HAPPENING NOW: Book a glowing mushroom forest tour

Ghost Mushroom Lane is letting visitors up and close to the Eerie Glow of Limestone Coast Forest after dark – a winter night of family fun.

Curious? So are we!

Forest SA is offering magical tours of Ghost Mushroom Lane from May to June, where you can see hundreds of glowing mushrooms lining the forest floor.

Ghost Mushroom lane is covered with a type of mushroom that glows after dark in Australia’s cooler months. For $20 per vehicle, families can experience the luminous night-time spectacle with direct access to the ‘eerie glow within’.

Visitors can explore this magical forest by following one of the many guided trials, including Ghostly Gully, Fungi Hunters Alley, Fairy Tail Hollows, and Neon Forrest.

The glowing Omphalotus Nidiformis, most commonly known as the ghost mushroom, emits a green light after hours due to a chemical reaction between fungal enzymes and oxygen.

The result is a beautiful green light covering pine stumps and rotting wood. The cup-shaped mushrooms can grow up to 20 centimetres in width and have a creamy white colour during the day.

The light they produce is known as bioluminescence through chemical reaction, much like the one seen in animals, such as glow worms and fireflies.

Your Ghost Mushroom viewing experience is directly influenced by the phase of the moon. A full moon will substantially diminish the appearance of the mushroom’s glow. The darker the night, the brighter the Ghost Mushroom will appear to the naked eye and the better experience you will enjoy.

Forest SA also offers guided tours for casual and closed groups from May to June annually. These tours offer the perfect opportunity to view and photograph the fungi up close in a safe environment.

Visitors wanting to see the forest after dark are encouraged to wear warm clothes, sensible shoes and to bring their own torch.

The ghost mushroom begins to emerge in late autumn, with Ghost Mushroom Lane only open to the public for this specific Winter period. Make sure to book in advance for this limited-time experience.

Before visiting the forest, you must obtain an access pass, which can be booked and paid for online.
