SDS1 - 2This is football as theatre – stripped back, extracted, frozen, repeated, abstracted. Beautiful and ugly all at once.

Former footballer Ahilan Ratnamohan performs SDS1, a thrilling dance-inspired work derived entirely from the physicality of ‘the beautiful game’.

Exploring soccer as an art form, this physically charged performance will visit contemporary performance venues across the country, transforming the stage to give audiences the surreal, visceral and poetic experience of a live football match.

SDS1 ponders the psyche of the vulnerable warriors on the pitch striving to be loved and hated, worshipped and scorned, and through sheer athletic prowess, creates layers of movement that see the player ‘caught’ in the performance, rather than in control of it.

“…The sheer physical stamina and technique displayed by this fusion of dance and football was thrilling…” Crikey Daily Review

“…no-one would dare deny that the trappings of football are not infused with potent gracefulness and elaborate drama.Real Time Arts

For the last six years, Ratnamohan has been developing a unique style of sport-in-performance, working with footballers to create live shows performed in an arts venue. Accompanying the national tour, Ahilan will be running workshops across Australia, giving participants the chance to experience this unique blend of sport and contemporary performance.

SDS1 will be at Vitalstatistix’ Theatre Waterside, 11 Nile Street, Port Adelaide from 26 to 29 August at 8pm with a Post Show Q&A session on the 27 August.
