Volunteers collect 10,000kgs of fruit across the state for those in need

Fruit Share Adelaide is celebrating a significant milestone in its mission to provide fresh produce to those in need, recently reaching 10,000 kilograms of fruit harvested. The harvested fruit is distributed directly to individuals and families who may lack access to fresh, healthy options.

Adelaide’s ideal climate fosters thriving fruit trees found in backyards, orchards, and public spaces. Unfortunately, much of this bounty goes neglected, often left to rot on the ground or thrown away.

Fruit Share Adelaide aims to change that narrative, ensuring that this usable, nutritious fruit feeds those who need it most by collecting it from trees in local yards, from farms/orchards and off public land.

“While we are currently focusing on the Mitcham and Onkaparinga council areas, we plan to expand across Adelaide. So, if you have fruit to share or know of fruit going to waste, please reach out!” Fruit Share Adelaide says on their website.

The harvested fruit is shared among tree owners, volunteer pickers, and local charities, contributing to meal and food relief programs. Many homeowners find themselves with more fruit than they can use, while others lack the time or ability to harvest it themselves. Additionally, commercial orchards often discard damaged or imperfect fruit, even if it’s perfectly good for eating or cooking.

Through coordinated volunteer efforts, Fruit Share Adelaide is turning wasted fruit into a lifeline for the community, marking this achievement with its latest collection of 210 kilograms of grapefruit in Pasadena.

Since launching its initiative in January, Fruit Share Adelaide has gained impressive traction, benefiting both local communities and the environment.

In just under a year, Fruit Share Adelaide has accomplished remarkable feats, including harvesting across 16 different councils in the Adelaide area.

Notable contributors include Onkaparinga, which donated 3,378kg over the past year, followed by Adelaide Hills with 2,575kg, Mitcham at 1,052 kg, Marion with 898kg, and Playford at 399kg.

Over the past year they have conducted a total of 85 backyard harvests, 18 orchard harvests, and 21 fruit pick-ups. More than 150 fruit tree properties have registered, with harvests occurring from over 90 of these sites.

Founded in 2023 by South Australian resident Brett Dunstone, Fruit Share Adelaide was inspired by The Hidden Orchard, a similar scheme in Ballarat, Victoria. Since its inception, it has quickly evolved into a dedicated team of volunteers committed to preventing food waste by collecting unwanted or surplus fruit for free distribution to food charities and the community.

Currently, there are 240 registered volunteers, with over 70 actively involved in the harvesting efforts.

Fruit Share Adelaide’s impact is further highlighted by its outreach to local charities. The initiative supports over 90 food relief charities, with more than 40 receiving regular donations. This extensive network ensures that fresh, healthy fruit reaches those who need it most.

The diversity of the harvested produce is impressive, with over 5,000 kilograms of citrus fruits collected, along with more than 4,400 kilograms of pome fruits, such as apples and pears and 185 kilograms of stone fruits, with expectations for increased yields as the season progresses. The harvest also includes 230 kilograms of vegetables and 90 kilograms of other fruits, such as feijoas, figs, macadamias, and white sapote.

Fruit Share Adelaide invites community members to join this rewarding initiative. Interested individuals can visit Fruit Share Adelaide to register their fruit trees if they have surplus fruit.

There are also volunteer opportunities for those interested in helping with fruit picking or assisting in the organisation’s operations.

Groups in need of fresh produce can register to receive donations, ensuring that no fruit goes to waste.

As the year progresses, Fruit Share Adelaide is eager to build on this momentum and continue making a positive impact within the community.

With every contribution, whether through harvesting or volunteering, the initiative is transforming lives and fostering a spirit of generosity. For further inquiries, interested parties are encouraged to reach out. Every fruit harvested truly counts!
