Scrolling decadent and expertly laced desserts on your social media feed doesn’t just have to be a past-time, but a way to recognise South Australian talent.
Use your expert taste from all those hours drooling over peoples dessert creations online to vote for South Australia’s only nominee, Maddalena DeMarco, to win the Royal Iced Cookie Artist of the Year in the Australasian Cake Oscar Awards.
The award is the highest level of recognition a cake artist or cookie decorator can achieve within Australasia.
“I sent the submission with 6 photos of my cookies in during very early hours one morning not expecting to hear back. It was a long shot, so it’s all very exciting that I’ve been nominated,” Maddalena says.
Since 2018, Maddalena has been creating custom sugar cookies with a twist for her business, Small & Sweet. She uses royal icing which is generally made with icing sugar and egg whites instead of the popular fondant which is often made of icing sugar, corn syrup, water and gelatin.
“It’s quite a different approach to most decorators in Adelaide. Using royal icing is more difficult and hands on, but you can be more crafty,” she says.
Maddalena’s designs definitely reflect her desire to take decorating to the next level. She’s created cookies of farm animals, cartoon characters, ice cream cones, milestone celebrations and more.
Her talent has also landed her as a nominee in the Best New Cookie Artist of the Year category.
Both awards, if she becomes a finalist, will take her to the ACADA Australasian Cake Oscar Awards Gala Black Tie Dinner in Brisbane where the overall winners for all categories will be announced.
“Everyone is so insanely talented, but to be a finalist and represent our state would be amazing,” Maddalena says.
All voting to get our South Australian representative in this category across the line closes at 5pm on Thursday 23rd March 2023.
