In a significant development, the Walkerville recreational centre development is set to go ahead with a complete rebuild – set to reinvigorate the recreational landscape of the community.
Partnering with Member for Adelaide Lucy Hood MP, the Council is poised to deliver a state-of-the-art recreational facility at 39 Smith Street, which is the former YMCA site. The project has been in the works for years, and was given the green light back in may.
At a Special Council Meeting this week, members deliberated between refurbishing the existing building (which was the original plan put forward almost 12 months ago), or opting for a knock-down-rebuild approach. Unanimously, they endorsed a complete redevelopment, citing the necessity for a modern, functional centre to meet the ongoing needs of the community.
Mayor Melissa Jones emphasised the Council’s diligence in exploring both refurbishment and new build options, with estimated costs aligning favourably with the budget for a new facility.
“With estimated new build costs within Council’s budget, a brand-new build will provide fit-for-purpose facilities today and into the future. A new centre will ensure better value for money and provide the modern facility that the community has been asking for,” said Mayor Jones.
“This redevelopment project will return recreation to the heart of the Township, enhancing the quality of life for individuals and families in Walkerville and beyond. I look forward to creating an inclusive and dynamic space where memories are made and wellbeing thrives.”
Securing a $5 million grant from the State Government, the Council has integrated the remaining project costs into its budget.
Member for Adelaide Lucy Hood MP ha been fighting for the community space for more than three years, originally holding booked-out community forums and knocking on local doors to get the communities feedback. Since the project’s green light last year, she’s been holding out her election commitment to deliver a community, sport and dec hub to 39 Smith Street.
“Working together with the Town of Walkerville, our local area will once again have access to the
community, wellness and recreational facilities they deserve,” said Ms Hood.
The former YMCA had operated in the area for more than 60 years offering indoor court sports, a gymnasium and fitness classes before it closed in 2019. This time round, the recreation centre is set to have even more.
While the final design is pending, the envisioned Walkerville recreational centre is slated to feature:
- A multi-purpose two-court stadium accommodating basketball, netball, badminton, and volleyball, alongside activities such as dance, gymnastics, and community events.
- An emphasis on inclusivity and accessibility.
- Diversified program offerings tailored to all community members.
- Integration of sustainable practices and eco-friendly features.
As the redevelopment unfolds, stakeholders are encouraged to stay updated for further announcements and updates.
