Warning issued for severe thunderstorms, destructive winds and large hailstones tonight

BoM has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for regions across SA, alerting residents of destructive winds and large hailstones coming tonight.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for destructive winds and large hailstones this afternoon (Sunday 30 October) for people in the following areas: Adelaide Metropolitan, Mount Lofty Ranges, Yorke Peninsula, Flinders, Mid North and parts of Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Kangaroo Island, Murraylands, North West Pastoral and North East Pastoral districts.

This is being caused by a low pressure system over the Bight that is intensifying and moving rapidly southeastwards. It will be located south of Kangaroo Island by early evening, and south of the Victorian border around midnight.

Severe thunderstorms are also generating along an associated front extending north from the North West Pastoral to the Eyre Peninsula. The front is expected to move eastwards across Adelaide this evening and then move through the eastern parts of the agricultural area early Monday.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds and large hailstones over the next several hours in the Adelaide Metropolitan, Mount Lofty Ranges, Yorke Peninsula, Flinders, Mid North and parts of the Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Kangaroo Island, Murraylands, North West Pastoral and North East Pastoral districts. Locations which may be affected include Adelaide, Whyalla, Clare, Maitland, Kingscote, Marla, Coober Pedy, Roxby Downs and Leigh Creek.

Severe thunderstorms are no longer occurring in the West Coast district and the warning for this district is cancelled.

The next warning is due to be issued by 7:30 pm.

If severe thunderstorms develop in the Adelaide Region, a more detailed Severe Thunderstorm Warning will be issued to people in this area.

Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau’s website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

  • Secure or put away loose items around your property.
  • Move cars under cover or away from trees.
  • Keep clear of fallen power lines.
  • Stay indoors, away from windows, while storms are nearby.
