Waymouth Street Gets Its Fringe On

waymouth084 copyOne of Adelaide’s great city streets will be transformed into a hip and sophisticated street venue for three consecutive Fridays during the Fringe.

Waymouth Street will be the destination of choice for scrumptious street food, tantalising beverages, eclectic music, roaming theatre, live art and music right in the heart of Adelaide’s smart and savvy business district.

The first party will be held on Friday 22 February, with two more to follow on Friday 1 March and Friday 8 March, running from 5pm – 10pm on each of those nights.

Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said that the events would be a great place for people to wind down and relax at the end of the working week while enjoying a variety of entertainment.

“Waymouth Street is fast becoming a food hotspot and the street parties will give the traders a chance to showcase their unique dining experiences to an after-work crowd looking for something different,” he said.

“We had around 3,000 people come along to the first ever event last year, and this year we’re expecting it to be just as popular, with live music and art, Fringe performers, street theatre and the laid-back atmosphere of a summer evening.”

The street will be closed to traffic from Waymouth Lane to the intersection of Topham Mall, allowing food, entertainment and revellers to take over.

Eloise Riggs, Manager at Press* Food and Wine said that the three street parties would be an opportunity to promote what the strip has to offer.

“This event helps build a great sense of community around the street and generates a bit of atmosphere and fun outside. This year we’re hosting a laneway bar along with Melt, capturing that great laneway vibe,” she said

Other restaurants participating include Manna Café, Bistro Dom, Gallery Bar, Press* Food and Wine, Georges on Waymouth, Lena’s Café, Un Caffé,  Stax Cafe and the Union Hotel, all serving examples of their dishes plus cocktails and South Australian wine, beer and cider.

Street theatre will bring the Fringe to the West End with acts ranging from the one man circus of Space Cowboy, the improvisation of Beautiful Stu and stunt hoola hoopist Judith Lanigan, among many others.

ShortStax, The Bearded Gypsy Band, Atlantic Street Band, The Hushes and DJ Tr!p are among those providing the musical soundtrack across the three nights while Audrey & Audrey, The Flamingo Showgirls, The Bouncers and Big Rory & Ochie are just some of the roaming street artists who will astonish and surprise unsuspecting punters.

Visual artists will also capture the street scene as it’s happening throughout the three evenings.

The Waymouth Street parties are part of the Splash Adelaide initiative, a partnership with Adelaide City Council and the State Government to create a vibrant city.
