We As Art, We As Artists

‘We as Art, We as Artists’ is a special collaborative project from a group of like‐minded Adelaide musicians which will debut at the Adelaide Fringe. Initiated by singer‐songwriter Mary Webb, the line‐up also includes members of popular folk‐rock band The Timbers, as well as 2012 Telstra Road to Discovery Songwriter Award winner, Kelly Menhennett – just to name a few.

The performance is based around the re‐arrangement of 12 existing songs, two from each singer‐songwriter in the collective. The new arrangements will see the songs performed as a chorus of voices; backed by violin, cello and percussion.

To expand on the musical experience; an art exhibition will be incorporated into the shows with a range of drawings and paintings on display, all of which have been inspired by the songs. The art will also be projected onto a screen on stage as the music is performed.

While the collaborative approach is similar to acts such as Seeker Lover Keeper and The Basement Birds, the musical style of ‘We as Art, We as Artists’ leans more towards the folk/roots genre, with the new arrangements giving the songs an interesting classical‐jazz twist.

A love of harmonies is what inspired Mary Webb to bring together this group of singer‐songwriters and seasoned musicians.
“As a solo artist you often get stuck singing alone,” she said.
“You can sing harmonies on a record – but it’s hard to re‐create that sound in a live setting. Plus it’s not quite the same as singing in harmony with other people where you can bounce off of each other.”

“This project is also about realising an existing song’s potential, and broadening its possibilities.”
