Get ready to lace up your hiking boots because we’ve found the most epic and unforgettable adventure at Mt Schank – a dormant volcano. While scrolling our FYP, we recently discovered this spectacular adventure on insta. It’s nestled just 12km south of Mount Gambier and offers spectacular 360-degree views of its stunning crater and the surrounding countryside.
Starting from the car park and picnic area beside the tranquil waterhole, the hike kicks off with a well-marked trail that leads you through a captivating environment.
The first stretch to the crater rim is about 900 meters, and with a moderate difficulty rating, it’s accessible for a wide range of hikers. Along the way, you’ll find 1,038 limestone planks expertly installed to help you on the way up.
As you reach the rim, the 2km loop around the crater offers sensational panoramic views. Gaze into the depths of the crater and soak in the lush greenery and vibrant colours of the landscape stretching out in every direction.
Named in December 1800 during an exploratory voyage by the ship HMS Lady Nelson, Mt Schank has a fascinating history. It was identified by Lieutenant Grant during this voyage, which also marked the naming of Mount Gambier.
This region is part of the Kanawinka Geopark, showcasing the natural wonders of volcanic activity, with Mt Schank being slightly older than its more famous neighbour, Mount Gambier.
Mt Schank stands as a striking example of South Australia’s volcanic heritage. Rising approximately 100m above the flat coastal plain, its cone-shaped form remains remarkably intact, providing a rare glimpse into the geological history of recent volcanic activity in the area.
Designated a State Heritage Area in 1992, the region encompasses around 150 hectares of protected land, ensuring its beauty and significance are preserved for generations to come.
The trail is designed with inclusivity in mind, for a refreshing break, the picnic area offers shelters and toilets, making it a great spot to relax and take in the scenery after your hike.
