Rose Park families are in for a treat this summer, with the newly upgraded Webb Street Reserve Playground officially opening on Tuesday, 16 December. To mark the occasion, the Burnside Council is throwing a celebration that’s sure to get the whole family excited.

Running from 4pm to 6pm, this free event will give locals the first look at the major transformation, which includes brand-new play equipment, fresh landscaping, colourful mural artwork, and an upgraded layout designed in partnership with the community.

Chief Executive Officer of the City of Burnside, Julia Grant, says that the beautiful mural is a key feature of the new space and was designed to unite the community. “The mural on the Scout Hall wall depicting children of all abilities playing together promoting inclusivity”, she explains.

The butterfly theme runs throughout the new playground, from the themed equipment to the interactive water course, which features plaques with fun butterfly facts.

To further bring the space to life, the council also grew native plants that attract butterflies at its Biodiversity Nursery, with the help of Rose Park Preschool and Rose Park Joey Scouts.

The opening celebration is stacked with activities to keep the little ones and parents entertained. Expect free face painting and hands-on butterfly craft activities, and at the same time, adults can feast on a barbecue cooked on-site by the Rotary Club of Burnside, with funds supporting the organisation’s humanitarian, educational and community initiatives.

The event marks the culmination of more than a year of community input, planning, and design refinement. Construction officially commenced in September 2025, with landscape specialists LCS appointed to deliver the refreshed playspace.

The upgrade has been a collaborative project with the council, involving extensive engagement sessions with residents, Rose Park Preschool, Rose Park Joey Scouts, and members of the Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP) Panel.

Feedback from these sessions has directly shaped the final design, ensuring the new playground is inclusive, accessible, and reflective of what local families value most. The community’s suggestions led to several key design considerations now being explored, including a truck-themed play piece, more open grass space, reduced picnic seating and a larger distance from the preschool.

The council says the feedback sessions were highly constructive, with residents openly sharing ideas and co-creating solutions that serve the Rose Park community for years to come.

A Community Co-Design Feedback Report, along with updated concept plans, has been released to the residents, and an additional consolidated design presentation is expected to be shared in mid-February as the project progresses.

The opening event will give families a first chance to explore what’s set to become Rose Park’s favourite hang-out. With modern equipment, natural landscaping, and vibrant artwork, the space has been designed to spark both adventure and imagination.
