One of Adelaide’s most loved independent breweries has been forced to close its Royal Park venue immediately, after its landlord terminated the lease and began securing the building early this morning.

In a heartfelt statement shared on social media this afternoon, Big Shed Brewing co-founder Craig Basford spoke directly to their loyal community.

“From the very outset Big Shed Brewing has been a business built on being honest with our public… In the spirit of that honesty, it’s with a heavy heart that I need to let you know that the landlord has decided to terminate our lease… This obviously means that for now at least we are closed.”

For years, Big Shed has been one of SA’s loudest champions of indie beer, growing from a humble passion project into an award-winning brewery known for its personality-packed beers and cheeky collaborations (hello, BruChocs). Their Royal Park home has hosted live gigs, trivia nights, and countless celebrations for beer lovers across the state.

But the team hasn’t shied away from the fact that the past few years have been tough. It entered voluntary administration in early 2024.

“It’s no secret that it’s been a tough environment to operate in basically since we moved in to this building,” the post read.

“We had a plan and shared that with the landlord… As far as we were aware, that plan was agreed… This morning a lawyer arrived and began the process of terminating our lease.”

While they admit it’s “far too early” to know what comes next, they’re determined this won’t be the end.“It is our goal to resolve this issue and get back to slinging the good stuff ASAP.”

The closure has left staff devastated, and founders Craig and Jason asked followers to be mindful of the people behind the taps. “Our team are fucking amazing… They are hurting and celebrating here will hurt even more. Please remember there are people behind this place.”

As the news broke, thousands of locals flooded the comments with messages of love and disbelief, a testament to just how much Big Shed has meant to SA’s craft beer scene. “I really hope this isn’t the end! You guys have had an impact on a lot of people and are dead set legends,” a fan shared.

Even in the face of uncertainty, Big Shed’s message remains to keep supporting local brewers, pubs, venues and bottle shops.

“If this is farewell… let me say thank you. You guys are why we go through the shit days and you’ve helped us celebrate the good!”

Adelaide is rallying behind Big Shed Brewing, and we’ll be first in line when they’re back pouring beers again.
