After a brief hiatus, West Beach Fish and Chips is gearing up to welcome beachgoers back for their cult-classic fish and chips with a refreshed inside and out.
The family-run spot, taken over early this year by George and Sandra Floridis, has long been a favourite for takeaway fish and chips, particularly on Sundays, when it would be unusual not to see the place packed.
At the centre of the renovations is a fresh new outdoor space that makes it much more enticing to dine in. The new outdoor area is set to open up more tables, bench seating, and cafe blinds. Outdoor ceiling fans will keep it breezy in the height of summer, and heating will keep it cosy in the depths of winter.
Inside, the shop has received a modern makeover, including new tiling, a refreshed layout, a new counter, and upgraded equipment. The updates are part of an effort to make the space more inviting to dine in, without sacrificing the charm that’s made the spot such a hit. The front facade is also getting a facelift, with new tiling and signage. Owner George Floridis says he’s keen to give the spot a bit more street appeal, and in the past it’s had “quite an unassuming street appeal. You would have driven past without noticing it,” George says.

While takeaway will remain a core part of the business, the family is keen to offer a welcoming space for customers to linger a little longer, enjoy their meals, and soak in the setting. George says, “We want people to feel comfortable, take their time, and enjoy the area.”
The reopening also marks a rebranding, which will roll out over coming months. “We’ve got beautiful dark glowing tiles on the floor, feature tiles on the front counter with an acrylic top, and a feature wall as well. I think it’s all going to tie together really, really nicely,” George says.
West Beach Fish and Chips is hoping to welcome the public back in from Sunday 28 September, with a few final touches on the outdoor area still underway.
The interior is being designed by MAD Studio, which is guiding the colour palette and feature walls that will give the space its fresh, coastal look.
Before taking over West Beach Fish and Chips, George ran a successful family business at Hallett Cove Shopping Centre for 22 years. After years of hard work, he knew it was time for a change, looking for a smaller, more relaxed venture where he could focus on what, in his eyes, is the number one feature of hospitality: service.
It’s something that’s always been important to George, and he’s bringing it to West Beach. “Service costs nothing. A smile, a greeting, making the transaction pleasant. That’s all it takes.”
But he believes in his food just as much as service. “Everyone who sells a product should believe that it’s the best product they can deliver, and I believe our product is excellent.”
Freshly refurbished but still full of charm, West Beach Fish and Chips is almost ready to serve up its beloved fish and chips once again.
