West Beach Surf Life Saving Club claims Overall State Champion Title in a triumphant win

The victory comes from the combined efforts of all sections of the club, including juniors, masters, and the senior competitors in a 3-day ordeal.

West Beach Surf Life Saving Club is celebrating a massive win after taking out the overall state championship for 2024/25 over the weekend. The victory comes from the combined efforts of all sections of the club, including juniors, masters, and the senior competitors in a 3-day ordeal.

“The overall club award is made up of all the different areas,” says Surf Sports Director Jenny Carberry.

“Each group has its own state championship, and we all come together to contribute to the final result.”

The club’s success is even more impressive given the challenges they’ve faced in recent years. With renovations disrupting training and athletes relying on volunteers and parents to transport equipment, the team’s determination and community spirit shone through.

“There were a couple of years where we didn’t have a club, and the athletes and kids were relying on people to pick up trailers and bring them to the beach every night. It was hard work, but the effort from everyone involved has been massive,” says Carberry.

The club boasts competitors aged from 7 to 70, with around 700 members overall.

“We’ve seen growth in our membership and a renewed interest in surf lifesaving. With new club rooms and more people putting their kids into nippers, we’re building momentum again,” says Carberry.

And it wasn’t just the athletes putting in the hard yards. Success at the State Championships was the result of a whole-club effort.

“We simply couldn’t compete without the incredible support of our coaches, area captains, officials, team managers, water safety officers, age group leaders, uniform coordinators, trailer towers, and countless volunteers who step up when needed,” she says.

As for the future, Carberry says the club is gearing up for Australian Nationals, then enjoying a much-deserved break.

“We have some great individual and team performances prepared for Nationals, so that’s our next focus.”

If you’re ready to get your life-saving boots on, Carberry prompts you to take the leap and come see what they’re about.

“Our main aim, really, is to get as many people competing as possible in all the different areas that are available.”
