The West End Redbacks will feature in the lead up to the ICC Cricket World Cup, playing two warm-up matches against qualifier the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Darwin.

The UAE will be making its second appearance at the ICC Cricket World Cup after finishing runner-up to Scotland at the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2014.

West End Redbacks coach, Darren Berry is excited about the opportunity for his players to play 50-over matches against an international side ahead of the Matador BBQs One-Day Cup in October.

“These matches will be an ideal preparation for our season and it will be a great opportunity for our players to face off against some unknown opposition,” Berry said.

“Half of our squad has been involved in national programs during the off season, so these matches will be important for the boys to come together before their first match and practice putting some of our strategies into match situations.

“UAE finished runner-up in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2014 and are definitely a cricket country on the rise, so it is exciting to be part of their Cricket World Cup preparation.”

These matches are part of the ICC’s High Performance Program (HPP) and will assist the ICC Cricket World Cup qualifiers’ preparations for cricket’s pinnacle 50-over tournament.

The UAE, along with Afghanistan, Ireland and Scotland, will play against state and provincial sides in Australia and New Zealand in September and October 2015 when they will be able to call on a number of specialist coaches and former players from both countries, to support their training and planning sessions.

The West End Redbacks will take on the UAE in two 50-over matches at Marrara Oval 1 in Darwin on September 23 and 25.

The West End Redbacks will begin their Matador BBQs One-Day Cup campaign against NSW on 4 October, while the UAE’s first round match of the ICC Cricket World Cup will be against Zimbabwe on 19 February, 2015.

The ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 accreditation is expected to open later this year. To ensure you are on the distribution list, please email your details to [email protected]
