Saigon Social opened its doors earlier this year in the newly developed Hendon Central shopping centre in Adelaide’s west. A $25 million development saw the centre become home to a Romeo’s supermarket, fast food spots, and local businesses.
Owner Nhi Huynh says Saigon Social is home to “possibly Adelaide’s biggest banh mi,” and she says they’re yet to be challenged. Nhi says “it’s a normal roll but we’ve just loaded it up with way more meat! It still has your classic pickle, carrot, relish, pate etc.” You’ll be able to get extra generous fillings of all your favourites, crispy roast pork, lemongrass chicken, tofu and plenty more.
Nhi comes from a hospitality background, having swapped from her formal sit down dining restaurant in the CBD. Her restaurant operated for several years before being claimed as one of COVID’s many victims within the food industry. After closing the restaurant’s doors, Nhi had an unanswered passion for hospitality and was in the opportune position to move into Hendon Central as a more casual establishment, which she could manage with her mum alongside.
It’s a family affair, with Nhi out the front serving, and her mum, Thuy out the back, cooking up fresh Vietnamese delights. Nhi says the pair work wonderfully together, and along with their fantastic team, have had an enthusiastic response from diners.
The local eatery offers a straightforward menu packed with flavour and full of Vietnamese street food favourites. Nhi says “there’s a real focus on quality and freshness with a smaller menu including banh mi, rice bowls and cold rolls.” The menu has a nicely balanced selection of vegetarian and meat-heavy offerings. Taste the remarkably flavoursome meatball skewers, or bite into a crispy spring roll. Or, try a huge combo banh mi absolutely packed with heaps of crispy roast pork, BBQ pork and juicy grilled chicken.
