Whale Watching, Wine & Winter. The Ultimate Victor Harbor Experience

It’s all been on our radar as a weekend hot spot since we were kids, and Victor Harbor on the Fleurieu Peninsula continues to deliver (especially now that we’re old enough to enjoy the food and wine from the region too!)

It’s all been on our radar as a weekend hot spot since we were kids, and Victor Harbor on the Fleurieu Peninsula continues to deliver (especially now that we’re old enough to enjoy the food and wine from the region too!)

Whale watching, wine tours, a cosy winter getaway locations are all amazing reasons to jump in the car with, or without kids, and venture South. Visit the many surfing beaches along the coastline, follow the walking trails, explore the region’s history or sample some local produce at the Victor Harbor farmers’ markets.

From May to October, pods of Southern Right whales inhabit the coastline of Victor Harbor due to the warm water providing suitable breeding and calving conditions. It is one of the most popular whale watching spots as Southern Right, Humpback and Fin whales are often seen in the area.

The whales can be seen off the beaches of Encounter Bay or from local lookouts. You can also jump off the Cockle Train at Middleton for the best viewing opportunities. To view the whales from the water, book a trip with The Big Duck Boat Tours. See newborn calves grow and develop throughout the season before becoming strong enough to return to the sub-Antarctic waters with their mothers around October.

Visit the South Australian Whale Centre at Victor Harbor for an educational experience on the history of whaling and whale watching in the region. They also have a whale sightings information line where you can obtain details on the latest timings and locations of successful sightings.

Being so close to the beach lends itself to another evolution in South Australian wine with Victor Harbour Winery, the No 58 Cellar Door & Gallery and Mt Jagged Wines creating a perfect triangle to trial along the roads surrounding the coastal townships. The multi-award winning Steam Exchange Brewery in heart of Goolwa is another must see destination where you can enjoy a quiet ale as you take in the river views.

As for where to stay? McCracken Country Club offers resort style accommodation, located just minutes from the township of Victor Harbor. Hidden off the main road and surrounded by panoramic views of the Hindmarsh Valley and manicured golf course fairways, you’ll feel like you’re in a private paradise. The resort offers a variety of spa rooms, suites, serviced apartments and self-contained villas, perfect for both leisure and corporate travels. Check out their SA Weekend Escape deal here.
