With their incredible beauty, rarity and strength, Diamonds always have been and always will be the traditional choice for lovers. Their qualities are symbolic of a relationship that lasts a lifetime. And when it comes to diamonds, it’s a personal choice with each stone unique bearing its own characteristics that complement those of its future owner.

But choosing the right diamond for you can be overwhelming. With so many cuts, colours and styles to choose from, it can be a daunting experience. That’s where the experts come in.

Andrew Mazzone Jewellers are synonymous with workmanship and cutting-edge technology in the diamond world which is why they offer both ethically mined, natural diamonds and eco-conscious lab-grown diamonds.

Lab-grown diamonds are becoming an ever-more popular choice but what exactly are they and what are the benefits over a natural diamond? We spoke to the team at Andrew Mazzone Jewellers to get the low-down.

What are lab-grown diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds are exactly like mined diamonds. They have an identical diamond chemical composition and look exactly the same as a mined diamond. It takes specialised equipment to detect the difference, and they are cut and graded in the same way as mined diamonds. They are not fake diamonds or diamond simulants, but diamonds that are simply grown in a laboratory. The lab process and technology does use energy and freshwater but doesn’t involve digging up the earth, which provides a great alternative to mined diamonds for eco-conscious couples.

Diamonds mined from the earth.

Natural mined diamonds were formed deep within the Earth between 1 to 3 billion years ago before dinosaurs and certainly before people. The process occurs when carbon dioxide is exposed to extreme heat and pressure over many years. The result is a mined diamond that has its own unique characteristics. Adelaide diamond experts, Andrew Mazzone Design Jewellers, have both ethically mined and beautifully cut natural diamonds.

What is the difference between lab-grown diamonds and mined diamonds?

The only difference between mined diamonds and lab grown diamonds is their origin. Mined diamonds come out of the earth and lab grown diamonds are made in a laboratory. A mined diamond and a lab grown diamond share the same properties of strength, sparkle and also the 4 C’s. They are also cut, graded exactly like mined diamonds.

Are all lab-grown diamonds perfect?

As the process of creating diamonds is similar in nature and albeit much quicker in the lab— inevitably most lab grown diamonds will have inclusions and will vary in colour just as mined diamonds do. However, they still achieve grading and certification liked mined diamonds, so you can clearly understand what you are purchasing.

Are lab-grown diamonds cheaper?

Yes! The materials, facilities and expertise required to create lab grown diamonds means that they are still a luxury product like a mined diamond. But as the laboratory process is quicker, less labour intensive and they aren’t as rare as mined diamonds, you can expect to save from 30% to 50%, depending on the quality and grade of the lab grown diamond you purchase.

Which is better for you?

Both mined and lab grown diamonds carry their own pros and cons and either one is the perfect choice for an engagement ring. Mined natural diamonds are ancient and rare and hold great mystery with symbolism and history. A lab grown diamond is an excellent alternative for the eco-minded person who wishes to help reduce their carbon footprint. They also suit customers looking to purchase a bigger and often higher quality diamond to suit their budget. Neither option is better than the other and it is important to discuss your individual needs with an expert diamond consultant.
