Needing some inspiration on what to do this public holiday? Here is our guide to what’s on and open.

The forecast is a sunny 24 degrees, the public holiday has cleared the ol’ calendar, and there’s plenty happening on January 26th, so grab your mates and make the most of your day! 

With lots of family friendly activities to keep the kids entertained during the final days of school holidays, to the respecting country parade, you can choose how to spend your time in a stack of different ways.

Here is our guide of what’s on and open this Australia Day.

WHAT’S ON

AUSSIE DAY DUCK RACE

The beloved Aussie Day Duck Race makes its grand return this month. It’s time to dust off your rubber duckies and purchase your tickets as there’s over $2000 in cash and prizes at stake this year. 

The Rotary Club of Morialta is once again at the helm of this event, offering an opportunity for everyone to get involved. Purchase one, two, or even three rubber ducks to contribute to projects benefiting the local community.

SPLASH AT NORWOOD SWIMMING POOL

Spend this Australia Day poolside at Norwood Swimming Centre!

Grab your friends and your bathers for a classic Australia Day pool party. Enjoy music, games and a sausage sizzle, and race the clock on the giant inflatable obstacle course.

PLAYFORD COUNCIL’S BIG BREAKFAST

A morning of fun awaits at Fremont Park on Australia Day with a big breakfast, live entertainment and family-friendly activities on offer for the whole community.

The event kicks off from 8am in Elizabeth Park, with local service groups cooking up free bacon and eggs for the community, with complimentary amusement rides and other activities available for children and young people.

AUSSIE LEGENDS DANCE PARTY

There are many Australia Day traditions… BBQs, beers with mates, and Ex-Men rocking The Ark with their huge Aussie Legends Dance Party!

The boys are playing all the rock/pop hits you love plus an Aussie made tribute set showcasing their 4 favourite Australian artists, Michael Hutchence + INXS, Jon Stevens + Noiseworks, Jimmy Barnes + Cold Chisel and John Farnham. ​Joso will be back for this one and only show!

Celebrate Australia Day with Ex-Men featuring Joso Bacic saluting Australia’s favourite sons, and a whole weekend to recover afterwards (no need to chuck a sickie!)

WILDSIDE PARTY BAND

The City of Onkaparinga will be hosting a massive Australia Day Festival at the South Adelaide Football Club with Wildside Party Band. They will be playing all of your favourite party smash hits from 7:30pm. So take your mates and party long into the Australia Day long weekend.

MARION OUTDOOR POOL

Cool off this summer with a movie under the stars at Marion Outdoor Pool

The Marion Outdoor Pool will be open on Australia Day, with DJ’s spinning some Aussie tunes, snags on the BBQ cooked by the Lions Club of Hallett Cove & Districts Inc. (for the first 500 people) and more.
With three pools, a splash park and waterslides, there is something for the whole family to experience.

WHAT’S OPEN

Mister Sunshine’s
Open from 7am, Mister Sunshine’s will serving up dishes as usual for anyone who wishes to dine to a bit of 70s rock with their morning coffee.

FRED Eatery
Located amongst the foliage at the Aldgate Village in the Adelaide Hills, FRED eatery is the perfect eating and shopping house for the local community, passers-by, and destination patrons. The good news is they will be open on Australia Day for anyone passing through.

ArtWine Estate
Open everyday of the Australia Day long weekend, tastings will be available of their mediterranean wines. ArtWine’s renowned platter lunches will also be available from 11am for those looking to nibble on something delicious throughout the day.

ODÉ Bistro
ODÉ, North Adelaide’s newest foodie hotspot, is bringing the elegance mixed with the fun spirit of a bistro to O’Connell Street.
Open for dinner from 5:30pm, seize the day and tick this new eatery off your list!

Kiin Restaurant
This Thai oasis will be serving up yummy food and relaxed vibes from 12pm, Friday. You can expect an intricate menu of Modern-Asian foods paired with South Australian wines aimed to take you on a flavour-filled journey of a lifetime.

Bobby’s Coffee Shop
Jack Sutton and the team won’t be leaving their loyal, coffee loving customers high and dry. From 7am you’ll be able to grab a cup of joe along with a sweet treat. The cafe are also currently in the running for Australia’s modest coffee shop, sounds like a vibe to me!

Melo Cafe 5087
The Windsor Gardens cafe will open up from 8:30am, serving all day breakfast and brunch. With mouthwatering Biscoff pancakes or the classic good ole Aussie breakfast with bacon, eggs and baked beans.

Our Boy Roy
The Clarence Garden cafe will be donating $1 from every coffee sold on the day to The Healing Foundation, an indigenous foundation dedicated to keeping Stolen Generations survivors voices at the forefront of the nations healing journey. Our Boy Roy will be open 7am-3pm.

Peter Rabbit
Whether a long lunch for 20, a unique garden-shared feast for 40 or a cocktail soiree for up to 120, Peter Rabbit offers tailored day and night food and drink packages to suit your tastes and style.
This space is cool and shady in the summer and warm and cosy in the winter with both undercover and outdoor spaces available, and they’re open from 8 am until 3 pm this Friday and all weekend

Bloom
Open on from 8am this Friday, Bloom Cafe is an old tram barn, a cafe & function space, and a garden playground.
Watch on as food dances over coals, coffee brews and the alcohol stays forever flowing. The staff at Bloom are passionate about the food and vibes that they create, your experience at Bloom will leave you stunned and excited to see more.

My Kingdom For A Horse
Tucked away on Adelaide’s Wright Street, My Kingdom for a Horse boasts bright colours that captivate the personality, style and character of the cafe.
My Kingdom’s bold flavours and stylish interior is definitely a place that you have to check out, if not for the beautiful coffee art and delicious menu, but for the friendly staff.
The cafe will be open from 8am to 4pm, Friday.

German Arms Hotel
Enjoy a quick trip up the expressway to take in all the sites of the historical town of Hahndorf and paying a visit to the iconic German Arms Hotel. Cool down with a Hofbrau and indulge in some traditional German pub food.
The pub also usually sling take away bevvies from the front bar for anyone who needs an extra carton.

The Maid Hotel
With cheap drinks and dining all day, The Maid has everything you desire in an Aussie pub. With $20 Burger and Beer, $35 Billson’s Buckets, $20 Jugs, $7 Billson shots. It’ll be the place to party.

The Suburban Brew
A small-batch brewery that aims to get people talking again through sharing a beer or two. The Suburban Brew offers their own beer varieties that combine traditional beer styles with a suburban flair. With a spacious outdoor area, The Suburban Brew is the perfect way to take advantage of the this summer weather.

The Unley
Catch some rays this Australia Day long weekend by hitting up The Unley’s glamorous rooftop bar with stunning views of Adelaide’s east. Enjoy dining from the venue’s all day menu which includes some of your favourite pub mainstays or try something from the food and drink specials on offer.

The Colonist
Located on The Parade, this trendy pub specialises in the homely food mainstays you can never get enough of. Enjoy food specials, happy hours , live music and more all Easter long weekend at The Colonist. Start your day right with a gourmet breakfast, or head in for lunch and stay for some refreshing alcoholic bevies.

Jacka Brothers Brewery
If you’re planning a little round trip north of the city, Jacka Brothers Brewery will be open and pumping this weekend.
The site has been transformed over the last three years and is now the ‘Taphouse’ of the Mid North. The brewery also features an Old Fashioned Lolly Stall, providing a nostalgic experience with traditional sweets and retro favourites.

Nijumaru Japanese Restaurant
Feeling like all-you-can-eat Japanese? Same, well you’re in luck because Nijumaru will be open from 5pm Friday at both their Glenelg and Prospect.

SUPERMARKETS

A number of supermarkets will open their doors for all your grocery needs including Woolworths, Coles, Foodland and IGA. Ensure to check your local stores time as they may vary throughout the day.

COLES: Port Lincoln, Port Pirie, Berri, Port Augusta, Mount Barker, Adelaide Rundle Place, Whyalla, Murray Bridge Green, Mount Gambier and Victor Harbor are open on Friday, with all other stores closed in South Australia.

WOOLWORTHS: All regional stores are open (except Millicent), and the Rundle Mall store is also open. All other stores are closed.

ALDI: All stores are closed for Australia Day.

FOODLAND: Most regional stores are open. Near Adelaide, the closest open stores are to Seacliff Park, Woodside and Port Noarlunga South.

BOOZE

Dan Murphy’s, BWS and Vintage Cellars are open on Friday, but hours may vary from store to store.

Liquorland stores in SA will be closed, except for Collinswood, Unley, Ingle Farm, Kurralta Park, North Haven, Hindmarsh, Victor Harbor, Reynella, Port Lincoln, Murray Bridge, Grand Junction Drive Thru, Mount Gambier, Aberfoyle Park, Brighton Drive Thru, Western Tavern Drive Thru, Waterloo Drive, Golden Grove, Victor Harbour McCracken, Whyalla Westlands, Rundle Mall, Port Augusta, Mount Barker and Berri.

SHOPPING

If you’re using the public holiday to shop up a storm, Rundle Mall and Harbour Town will be your go to destination with most major retail outlets opening from 11am.
This includes Target, Kmart, Myer and David Jones.

Ikea and Bunnings will also be opened from 9am.

The Officeworks store on Gawler Place in Adelaide’s CBD will be open from 11am to 5pm, while their Parafield store will trade from 9am to 6pm.
