With September marking the end of cold mornings and wintery afternoons, we can’t wait to ease into longer and sunnier days with summer, quite literally, around the corner.

As the sunshine returns to South Australia, there’s plenty to do in our lively state, so it’s time to mark your calendar with all the exciting upcoming events this month!

With the state returning to a COVID norm, SA is slowly but surely returning to its hustling and bustling self. However, make sure to check the event websites before heading out, just in case there are any last-minute changes.

Kicking off September, it’s your Dad’s favourite day, with Father’s Day landing on September 5. Check out our extensive Father’s Day guide to see how to celebrate your old man next week.

1. Hahndorf. Handmade. Handcrafted. Handpicked

1 – 30 September, Hahndorf

Hahndorf will celebrate their rich linage of artisan culture over a month-long festival in September called Hahndorf. Handmade. Handcrafted. Handpicked, with more than 300 intimate events and experiences in and around the Main Street of the historic village. 

Filled with bespoke experiences for all ages and tastes, you can find great events from food & drink, art & craft, family fun, fashion & beauty, history & story-telling, workshops & masterclasses or if you simply love a free event – there is something for everyone.

2. Italian Cheese After Dark

1 September, Adelaide Central Markets

Enjoy the best Italian cheese paired with Italian style wine. Hosted by Smelly Cheese Co and held upstairs at the Adelaide Central Market, this Italian Cheese and Wine master class will be extra special as they will be serving up delicious cheese wheel pasta – piping hot spaghetti served in a wheel of Parmigiano Reggiano and topped with decadent shavings of truffle!

Tickets cost $70, with the event running from 6:30pm – 8:30pm.

3. Fermentation Dining Experience with Plant B

September 3, King William Road

A one-night-only fermentation workshop coming to one of Adelaide’s most-loved foodie spots, Plant B Life, on 3 September at the King William Road location, with the venue’s interior set out in informal long bench tables perfect for the workshop event style, with plenty of room for 25 eager foodies to attend.

Adelaide’s own Masterchef star and fermenting queen, Mandy Hall will be leading the evening with Plant B Life founder Kate Abraham, creating Kimchi pancakes and mouth-watering tofu dumplings.

4. PLC Gin Masterclass

4 September, McLaren Vale

Join the team from Prohibition Liquor Co with a special Masterclass hosted by The Prohibition team. The masterclass gives you an in-depth knowledge of gin and flavour botanicals and special insights into the distillation process.

Be guided through a gin masterclass, with a tasting of three of Prohibition’s finest gins. Enjoy a signature PLC gourmet toastie to accompany the gin flight that is perfectly paired with Tonic and garnishes.

5. Adelaide Family Carnival

3-5 September | 10 – 12 September

After the cancellation of the highly-anticipated Royal Adelaide Show, two Carnival Family operators have banded together to open their own event for three epic weekends of family fun this month.

Offering some new thrill rides including ‘No Limits’ and ‘The Mattahorn’ (new to the Adelaide circuit), Super Sizzler and Drift Dodgems, a Ferris Wheel and more the event will cater for families of all ages, teenagers and young adults.

6. Parwana for Afghanistan (Sold Out)

6 September,

Adelaide culinary icons Parwana Kitchen are hosting a fundraising dinner in order to provide emergency relief to displaced civilians trapped amidst the unfolding tragedy in Afghanistan. 

The dinner will feature Parwana’s mouth-watering cuisine, live Afghan music, an auction of traditional Afghan goods, and speeches from those working within and for Afghanistan. The popular venue has been feeding Adelaideans traditional Afghan dishes since its opening in 2009, headed up by Durkhanai Ayubi, who came to Australia with her family from Afghanistan in 1987.

7. In Depth: Illuminate Adelaide in Renmark

17 September – 9 October, Renmark

As part of Illuminate Adelaide, In Depth is a large-scale multimedia event responsive to the Murray River, its history and the community of Renmark. Projection, sound and lighting transform the river and banks after dark as the local habitat is transformed to celebrate one of the river’s oldest residents.

8. Vegustation at Hispanic Mechanic

September 19, Frewville

Brought to you by the brains behind Adelaide’s ever-so-popular Vegan Festival, the Vegustation series is back and better than ever.

Join talented vegan Head Chef Greggory Hill at Hispanic Mechanic with his Dancing Daikon kitchen whipping up the most delectable afternoon that is not to be missed. Hosted within the funky interior of Hispanic Mechanic, tempt your taste buds with Adelaide’s ultimate compassionate foodie experience.

9. Sparkling Fest

23 September, National Wine Centre

The National Wine Centre of Australia is bringing back one of their most iconic events, well-loved by fans of fizz across South Australia. This event is an ideal day out for champagne and sparkling connoisseurs, as well as bubbly novices looking to learn more about the sophisticated world of sparkling. 

Taking place throughout September and October, this months event will feature a Sparkling vs Champagne dinner. Guests will be able to tuck into a sumptuous four-course Seafood extravaganza, prepared by Executive Chef Steven Clark, paired with some of South Australia’s best local sparkling and their French counterparts.

10. Nature Festival

September 25 – October 4

Nature Festival, returning to South Australia from the 25th of September to the 4th of October, has released its full program of events featuring an expansive array of talks, exhibitions, nature walks, workshops, bird watching expeditions, and nature poetry events – to name only a few!

Highlights from the 2021 program include a boozy boat party popping up on the Torrens River, a maze amid mangroves, and a series of free events exploring the city’s diverse birdlife.
