Why The Barossa Distilling Co. Is The Place To Take Your Mates This Winter

Fabulous cocktails. Traditional wood-fired pizzas. A rich history. Barossa Distilling Company has it all.

We still remember our absolute delight when we first learned that Barossa Distilling Company was setting up shop in the Barossa Valley with The Distillery, their Distillery Craft Spirits Tasting & Cocktail Bar. We’re no less delighted to this day.

Housed in the Old Penfolds Distillery on the Provenance Barossa site in Nuriootpa, The Distillery is an ode to the rich history of distillation. It is home to some of the oldest commercial stills in Australia, including a Coffey Still, of which there are only three in the world.

The Distillery is open five days a week, offering structured tastings and tasting paddles of their own award-winning gins (but you can also find a taste of great craft spirits from Australia and around the world). And it’s not just for gin lovers — The Distillery also has a great selection of whisk(e)y, rum, vodka, brandy, and liquors for you to try.

Being a celebration of all things spirits, naturally the team behind The Distillery spend a huge amount of time and effort creating some of the finest cocktails to be found in the Barossa.

The Summer Cup will have you dreaming of balmy summer evenings, featuring Barossa Distilling’s Budburst Gin with the Classic Pimm’s and Lemonade. The Maggie Collins cocktail has taken a traditional Collins in the direction of the gin fizz, but let’s not let technicalities get in the way of a good cocktail.

A recent winter favourite includes the Gin Laced Hot Chocolate, a beverage ideal for wintry weekends.

Spirits not your thing? Not to worry, you’ll find interesting, local Barossa wines and beer from smaller producers served up here as well.

The Distillery is also serving up food all day, with cheese platters showcasing some of South Australia’s best produce. They’ve also got you covered for lunch or a light dinner.

The bites menu features some tasty dishes, such as house made falafel with cauliflower and chickpea dhal, dukkah, and coconut yoghurt, or classic buttermilk fried chicken fingers with a golden rum and pineapple sauce. Or, grab a traditional wood-fired pizza from neighbours, Ember Pizza.

The Distillery also hosts Friday After Dark every Friday with live music from 6pm.

Start your weekend the right way, with the lights down low and oil lamps flickering. The intimate space offers a warm industrial feel and relaxed vibe that is the perfect place to catch up with friends for a drink around the warmth of a firepit.

Share some wood fired pizza and stay late for cracking cocktails — is there a better way to kick off your weekend? No. No is the answer here.

You can find Barossa Distilling Company at 18-28 Tanunda Road, Nuriootpa, Barossa Valley SA 5355.
