Your go-to riverside pub for pre-game pints and Adelaide Oval views

Enjoy great craft beer, hearty food, and stunning views of Adelaide Oval at Malt Shovel Taphouse, the perfect spot for pre-game drinks, casual hangs, and riverside relaxation.

If you’re heading to the footy, theatre, or just keen for a laid-back drink by the river with friends, Malt Shovel Taphouse should be at the top of your list this winter.

Tucked right next to the Riverbank Footbridge and just a stone’s throw from the Festival Theatre and North Terrace, the Taphouse offers the vibe of a trendy pub or brewery with the city’s best view of Adelaide Oval and the River Torrens—no exaggeration.

It’s easy-going and welcoming, with a big open-air terrace that is cosy on cooler days and gets the best of the afternoon sun. Live music, a menu made to share and an extensive list of options at the bar mean this venue ticks all the boxes.

Its location is second to none for those heading to Adelaide Oval or the Festival Theatre, or even if you didn’t score a ticket to the game – with the Taphouse’s Live & Loud streaming of AFL games on outdoor LED screens a fan favourite.

“Game day at Malt Shovel Taphouse is electric! We’ve become a game day ritual for fans who want somewhere close to the action with great food and drink specials,” says Abbi O’Brien, Malt Shovel Taphouse Venue Manager.

“There’s a real buzz in the air, with groups of mates piling into the venue early to claim a table before making the short walk over the bridge to the Oval, or after the game for a debrief over drinks.”

“The bar’s got something for everyone—whether it’s our $8 imperial pints during happy hour on Friday nights, $12 tap cocktails on Thursdays, or $14 beer paddles on Sundays.”

Craft beer is the main event here. The taps are always rotating, featuring limited releases, seasonal brews, and crowd favourites. Doesn’t matter if you’re a beer nerd or just after something cold and local, there’s always something worth trying.

“We’ve got sixteen craft beers on tap and they’re always changing. If you can’t pick, our tasting paddles are a great way to sample a few, or our staff are always happy to make a recommendation,” adds Abbi.

As for the food, it’s hearty and made to share. Think generous platters, small plates to mix and match, great cuts of steak and comforting classics that hit the spot.

“Our Feast Platter is always a crowd pleaser and one of Chef Sol’s favourites – juicy roast pork, chicken and striploin steak served with piping hot roast potatoes and seasonal veggies, plus your choice of sauces,” Abbi says.

The menu, great atmosphere and unbeatable location also make the Taphouse perfect for private or corporate events, especially outdoors on the sprawling deck.

So whether you’re looking for a scenic backdrop for drinks after work, an easy stop on the way to the show or the game, or simply a warming winter lunch spot, Malt Shovel Taphouse is the place to make plans.
