A special ‘Meet the Buyer’ event is happening in Whyalla today, working to connect local businesses with state government agencies to help them secure more government contracts. The event is part of the ongoing efforts by both State and Federal Governments to revive Whyalla’s economy, particularly after the downturn in the steelmaking industry.
The event gives local business operators opportunities to engage directly with various government bodies, gaining a clearer understanding of how to participate in government projects. The initiative is one of many support mechanisms in place following the commitment of a $2.4 billion rescue package designed to save the Whyalla Steelworks.
Along with the event, applications for $10,000 grants are open, designed to help businesses mitigate operational costs during challenging economic periods. Attendees will also get more information on the range of financial support available.
The State Government has already taken strategic steps to boost local industry participation by establishing the Whyalla Special Economic Zone. This targeted initiative aims to increase local involvement in significant state projects, including the substantial $32 million upgrade of the Whyalla Airport runway.
This major airport upgrade has already positively influenced the local economy, channelling over $1 million into various sectors such as materials supply, equipment hire, and labour hire, among others.
Stephen Mullighan MP, Treasurer shared, “The Government has made it a priority to look local first and help the businesses, workers and suppliers in Whyalla.
“There’s a number of significant projects planned for the Upper Spencer Gulf and it’s important local businesses are given every opportunity to benefit from this work.
“The businesses will also be able to hear about the supports and grants available to help them recover following the decline in steelmaking in Whyalla.”
Through events like the Whyalla Meet the Buyer, direct dialogue between local businesses and government agencies is encouraged, while the community is encouraged towards sustainable economic regeneration. This strategic engagement demonstrates a clear commitment to making sure that local businesses are not only prepared but also thoroughly integrated into upcoming infrastructural and economic developments within the region.
