A familiar foreshore landmark in Whyalla is stepping into a new era, with the Beach Hotel changing hands in a move that’s being read as a strong show of confidence in the city’s future.
The Beach Hotel has been acquired by South Australian developer Lofty Property Group, with plans underway to refurbish the well-known accommodation and hospitality venue overlooking Whyalla’s waterfront. At a time when the city continues to navigate the steelworks administration process, the sale has been welcomed as a positive signal that private investment in Whyalla remains active and assured.
Positioned on the foreshore, the Beach Hotel has long been part of the city’s social and hospitality landscape. The planned refurbishment is expected to support local jobs, contribute to the visitor economy and bring renewed life to a venue many locals know well, reinforcing the idea that Whyalla’s story is still very much moving forward.
The sale builds on a wave of coordinated investment already reshaping the foreshore. Recent State, Commonwealth and council-backed projects, including the Surf Life Saving Club, café and Splash and Play Plaza, have transformed the waterfront into a space designed for community use and visitor appeal, with the Beach Hotel poised to play a key role in that evolving precinct.
The transaction was handled independently by the administrators of OneSteel Manufacturing, with settlement expected later this month. Proceeds from the sale will remain with the administrators to support ongoing steelworks operations and protect business continuity during the administration period.
Treasurer and Minister for Energy and Mining Tom Koutsantonis described the sale as an encouraging development. “This is a positive step for Whyalla at an important time. Businesses are choosing to invest in Whyalla because they see its future,” he said.
“A much-loved venue will be brought back to life, new jobs will be created, and the foreshore will continue its transformation into a genuine destination for locals and visitors.”
City of Whyalla Mayor Phill Stone also welcomed the news. “Our foreshore has taken major steps forward over the past few years, and private investment building on that momentum is exactly what we want to see,” he said.
“We look forward to the Beach Hotel returning as a vibrant part of the community.”
As Whyalla balances challenge with renewal, the Beach Hotel’s revival feels quietly significant, another step in a longer journey that blends confidence, community and a growing sense of place along the foreshore.
